B.C. Deeper Blue Trip 2009

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
sounds good so far.

Which outfitter are you working for? I guide out of the Trembler Area east of Smithers. spent a good chunk of time in the Nass area to the north of Terrace. Come on the trip, we'll talk Goats & Grizz ;)

I really don't expect you to shift the schedule on my part. If it needs to be end of June, I understand. If it works well for others in July, that is great.

I take it Markus is spear friendly?
Did you ever talk to Lindsey last time?

I think July will be fine Lee, maybe we can get Chris and some others up again.
Lindsay was basically unavailable, and Markus was very spear friendly, even taking us just off nice dive sites but out of the direct areas. He would take us to spots, I would jump in to check the depth of the vis, if it was dark down below 10 metres we'd move to another spot not far, etc. Plus we saw Greys and dolphins.
Even had the "secret spot" with 1000's of 5lb Black Rocks which was really unbelievable... really! That was where I got my Ling too. Markus know many spots as he angles, and also owns an island that he said we could camp on for free if we wanted, with acccess to the resort showers. Something to think about.

Sounds awesome Erik. Perfect for spearing that area. The rockfish schools sounds reminiscent of Haddington. I would also love to just freedive Browning wall. I would be keen to camp on his island if I don't bring my family out (which is one option I am considering). Once we firm dates, we should contact Markus and book him.

The thing about the island is that we'd be somewhat isolated, but we could rent our own 16' for the week and just go out and hit spots.
But I think I'd prefer to camp at Port Hardy for the convenience and book Markus for 4 days with a day off in the middle.

I was thinking it would be camping on the island and still going out with Markus just the same. I agree with you that it would be less ideal with the isolation.

We could do that too Lee, but it might not be for everybody. I think that taking your family would be a great idea Lee. I may or may not have a friend coming, we'll see. I hope my bro-in-law can make it this year. Let Lars know! Colin if you could let BusaRob know too.

I'll be working for Milligan Outfitters, My brother hooked me up with the job and I know very little about them haha. Have you heard of them? Also known as Coast Mountain Outfitters I believe. We'll be doing the spring bear hunt off boats apparently, I'm stoked as hell.

Re: BC Spearo/camp trip Round IV.

Just got back from the Charrlottes. The water there was amazingly clear but cold, even for a guy from the Yukon. I only did two short dives in Rennel Sound beacuse of the time it took to get there. I rode a bike with a friend from the ferry terminal in very unbike friendly condidtions. The first night was spent without a sleeping bag since I lost it somewhere on the way in. I lost a day biking back to town and trying to hunt down a bag or blanket or anything I could use for warmth. I was on a wild goose chase all over Charrlotte city and skidigate. The short dives that I had were great with the ice cream headaches and all. The last day the fresh layer of the ocean actually froze. Losts of life compared to what I'm used to and the Rock Scallops and Cucumbers were very tasty. I have a few pics of the above water scenery. Picasa Web Albums - nathan - Charrlottes#

Re: BC Spearo/camp trip Round IV.

Beautiful photos. Was there much fish life?

Re: BC Spearo/camp trip Round IV.

Lots of small fish, but I didn't go that deep, 50-60feet max and just for two dives and didn't cover a whole lot of area. My body was hurting from packing around all my gear through the mountain passes and trying to keep that wet wood burning. I know in a place like that I could have found alot of fish If I had more time but I was just so dehydrated one day and burnt out the other. The cold water didn't help either. I'm kindof thinking of going back at the end of April but this time taking my truck over and doing it right but I can't complain I had a great time even though it was short. Talking to the locals they said it's easy to catch halibut in 30-60 feet of water in that area and lots of ling and rock fish as well. I found a Octopus lair and with noone home and played with a wolf eel.

Re: BC Spearo/camp trip Round IV.

You have any time off after July 15? My bro and I have two months off starting then. Rupert Charlottes ** or van I'd love to meet you or your spearo buddies.

Hey guys. I'm in for early July. The end of June is also the last string of school for the kiddies and I have a four-day camping trip planned for Silver Beach with them - North End of the Seymor Arm - Shuswap Lake.

Lee - I can show you an easy shore dive that I did the final day last year where I took two large dungeonous and saw 8-10 more.

Marcus was a great hire - and he knows this guy with this great island and private residence that could even be utilized ;) Good choice though - some amenities and access to places where you come up and say aloud, "okay this is rediculous how much I JUST saw on that dive" Being buzzed by a sealion twice last year was quite a memory for me. Man that size of that black rockfish I took...

<wiping chops> alright. Anyway I'm in for early July.

Gabe

That's great Gabe, looking forward to watching you dive again :)

July 11-19/2009

did you guys see any halibut last year? and im in for july as well

All I ever see of halibut or sole is a puff of sand >8^(
But they're out there- we just need a guide to take us to the right spot.
Is that your standup wheelie on the avatar?
Glad you're coming!

that would be mine but about a week after this i ate it doing a stoppie to wheelie so im a little more careful now tend to keep both tires on the ground as the wipe out cost me about 80 stitches in the right arm and new plastics.so is there a ferry direct to port hardy or do we cross to nanaimo drive up island to port hardy.how deep are the halibut?

July 11 - 19? That sounds pretty do-able. I'll be home from NZ in a few weeks and itching to spear something a few hours after that.
