B.C. Deeper Blue Trip 2009

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Ferry over to Nanaimo and drive up 4 hours or so to Port Hardy... we can make arrangements for meeting at the Van side of Horseshoe Bay and share rides etc :)
And yes, fairings cost $$ haha!
I would say that the cold water takes some getting used to, combined with the vis, currents etc. But extremely rewarding as it is challenging!
5mm suit or more is a must if you want some time in, and at that you will be cold at the end of the day, so we always get campsites with tons of hot water in the showers ;)

You should bring your friends to the Charlottes sometime after june 15 when spearslinger and i are done bear hunting! There are some beautiful bountiful places out there, with far less competition. Thats where i'l be all summer.

What is the average ocean temp in summer?
Depends where you are on the coast. Up north end the water is 8-10C. I wear a 7mm custom plus a 3mm vest, and 8 or 9kilos. Vis can be really good in some spots. I've seen 40 metre vis @ 40 metres, but usually it's about 10 metres or so.

That's great Gabe, looking forward to watching you dive again :)

July 11-19/2009

are these our confirmed dates? I need to let work know so I can book them off. things here are crazy, early I get the word into Ops the better.

Yup. I've booked the time off and Lee is in as far as I know.

I will try. I'd move there in a heartbeat if I could get work up there.

And the temp is usually 8 to 10C up there, spearslinger.

July 11-19 sounds good. I can come for a chunk of the July 11-19 dates. I will likely bring my family and camp with them. I can probably commit for 2 days of boat diving. Where are you thinking of camping this year? Closer to port hardy? I really like the amenities that the telegraph campground had for cold water diving.

lee

Lee that's great, I value our time together, and you have a great family.
We can stay in TC again if everyone's keen- I was thinking about PH but there may be less shore access there.

so is the trip destination for sure or is the spot still undetermined?there is also the west coast of Vancouver island there may be better campsites but the currents are definitely a little stronger is everyone booking a site in advance or do we do that as a group?

We'll stay at Telegraph Cove and book a few sites soon, split the costs. It's a good spot for shore diving and we can go up to Port Hardy (30 minutes) by car for the boat days :)

I was just talking with a patient of mine not ten minutes ago, about how he likes to prepare raw oysters and fresh crab :) Dates are good. I'm in guys.

I am going to book a campsite and a few days on the boat asap. Campsites can be shared to cut costs and of course we'll share the boat costs. I will use my VISA- I'm hoping those who are IN for sure can commit as it may end up being more expensive than expected with less particpants. The boat I believe was 6 hours for 600$ or something, between 5 divers it worked out 125$ each I think, thereabouts. Best money you'll ever spend!
2 tents/vehicles per site was what we did last year.
Let me know!

how many of us are there going to be now in total?how many folks can we fit in a campsite?

I will be in a campsite with my family. Likely Sun-Wed. I have a family reunion to head to by Thursday in Montana. If it works out with others I would love to boat (or shore) dive Mon and Tues

lee

I think 2 vehicles and 2 tents per site is acceptable. I'll book a site for me and whoever else shows up. There was still space there last year so I dont think that's a problem. Lee do you want me to book a site for you?

No thats ok Erik, thanks. I'll book one soon and put it on my credit card, so that I don't need to pay you back.
