Cold smoked wrasse sounds interesting Podge. Im trying to picture it. Was it like a tough strip of jerky (rofl), or more like tender fillets??

Personally I am not one for shooting wrasse but when they come my way (OMD) I often cold smoke them & I would have to say they are just about the best fish for this purpose.

You might be right there Dave; I think the size of it combined, with some orange spots I noticed while trying to deal with it in the water, convinced me it was a plaice... Is the hall of fame open to a misidentified flounder?

I agree......I am off to Durdle Door in 2 weeks for a weekend as my boys want to go fossil hunting - not enough time this time to take the spearing gear although I will be checking it out from the shore!!!!

Sorry, not to do with spearing - but which is the easiest place to take the kids fossil hunting in terms of access, distance and parking? I used to go to Charmouth.

Rich, although I spear around Dorset I live about 70 miles away so don’t know the area as well as some. I would have thought that Charmouth or may be Lyme Regis would be your best spots.

I love my float. When a boat is heading my way I can grab one end of the safety sausage and wave it about like Mallet's Mallet until they get the message and change course.
Each to their own though.

Redvanrob, kudos on the flounder. I think they are really good eating. In Grigson's fish book she describes flounder as tasting like a damp towel, but I reckon its a good Plaice substitute. Get that in the HOF buddy, looks like a 2lb'er. The one my girlfriend speared earlier in the week refused to die even after being brained and having its spine severed at the head. It only stopped flapping once I gutted it. Tough customers flatfish.

Hi Diver9. Charmouth is great for fossils but watch out for the very soft mud, had some family over and their 6 year old sank up to his waist. His Dad got him out but he then sank in and had to be recovered as well. Keep any kids insight!

Lots of spearo's (even very experienced ones) make that mistake and when fresh flounders sometimes have quite bright orange spots which adds to the confusion.

A worthy entry in the HoF. Pm sent.

Had a dive this evening. GLOOMY, planktonic and un-fishy shore dive. I hope the vis improves soon.

Saw a beautiful blue jellyfish though.

Those spots usually fade away within a short while of being speared.

Thanks for the tips this weekend. Strong wind this morning (W to SW). Gut feeling is to head to Falmouth, but prefer the idea of staying in the St Austell area or on the Lizard, but unsure if I will find the same shelter from the wind and swell?

May the vis be with you mate! I'm hoping for better conditions on the S. coast as a couple of days back Falmouth was rather bloomy. The Easterlys forecast for next week will most likely scotch that one though. Still, gives the flatties time to regrouprofl.

Just to let you know the south coast sea conditions after walking the dog. There seems to be quite a swell running although not much chop. Vis is still a little murky (from what I could see from above) although far better than it has been.

Good luck to all diving this weekend, wife is working (so I have the wee ones) and am getting over a bad case of man flu!! (no where's my refried beans and tobasco!!!!)
