Hey Everyone!!

Hope you've all been keeping well. I have been trying to get my ear to heal up for a while now.. been to see GP's, ENTS's and Dive specialists and seem to have some weird problem that stops my ear producing wax so infections are pretty easy to come by in any case I put the spearfishing to bed until this last bout of good weather just tipped me over the edge so I got my gear.. which included a new fisheye style Gopro surf camera and got the hell back out there... hope you all enjoy the unique new-style footage and safe diving to you all

Wow, that was hard going. No internet for 2 days due to my router packing in! Happy birthday badlander. Glad to hear that school is going well. I just spent the day down on towan beach counting limpets!! Oh, and doing the big seaweed surveyrofl. It was kind of fun but some there didnt see the point! Makes you think why they signed up to a marine conservation degree. Had to laugh at some girls who were trying to figure out what a group of dolphins were called in blue reef aquarium. At one they were considering a bean or school! They may be fresh out of school with top marks but i think they fried their brains tryingrofl.

Nice video jim. Was the water really that clear or was it just the wide angle lens which made it look that way. The wide lens can really make bad viz look great.

Just looked on tradgicseaweed and i think i will be spearing the north coast on friday. Maybe take the cam in again.

I should have gone to the collage freshers fair today but how could i resist diving on a day like today? A bass in the first few mins, a big seal watching from on the rocks, lobsters looking out of holes and great viz. What could go wrong? A near shallow water blackout or a near samba! I did a dive down to a little more than 10m into the bottom of a gully. As i looked up i could see the schools of pollock and just behind them a nice school of bass. Knowing they were just out of range, but it seemed they were looking for me, i hung on for a while. I didnt think feel like i was pushing myself and due to the depth i abandoned the bass and slowly headed up. About half way up i started to feel really light headed. Thru training before, and chatting to a good friend of mine in the past (he had a blackout while competing for the uk freedive team) i knew what was likely to happen and what not to do. I relaxed more and gently finned to the surface and my first breath was as slow and as relaxed as can be. Then, just to be sure i pulled my float to me and used it to rest a little more. That was a good kick up the arse for me. I stayed shallow for the rest for the dive. Before the questions are asked, no i didn't hyperventerlate before. Yes i was diving alone and i felt the bottom before i felt like it was a strain.

I guess there are a few things i need to learn from this. I do tend to slightly dehydrate before a dive as i always pee like a trooper if i dont (i guess i may just have to live with that now!). I do sometimes dive slightly heavy in shallow water and i didnt readjust my belt so i was having to fin a fair bit to get moving up. For anyone else reading this, training is good. I was taught about this before and read up on it. I was going to do some more training last winter but funds would not allow it but i feel i need to update my training soon!

Out at fort bovisand back in the days of howard but the most recent was at the sett tank. Mind you, that was a good few years back. After my mate told me about what happened to him in the comp i read up on it.

What happened to me is not in the same league as this. I just got light headed but this is what was coming if i'd have pushed things! No fish is worth pushing your self for!

I think Bryn (aka Almostafish) at the Portland Spearo Academy ( www.portlandspearoacademy.co.uk ) runs/organises courses for this sort of thing. He did one recently down at Vobster, which was well attended by people from this forum. I'm hoping to get myself on the next one, whenever that might be.

Glad it wasn't worse. I've recently dropped some weight from my belt as i felt it probably wiser to be slightly underweighted in the shallows than be overweighted when deep (i'm a bit too slack to adjust my belt for every dive)
It's always going to get the 'never dive alone' agrument but if i'm honest, if i had to rely on a dive buddy to tie in with when i was available to dive i'd probably never dive. I did the freedive course with the saltfree lot up at cheptstow and learnt a lot of good tips from them but ultimately i think if you dive alone, as i'm sure the majority of us do, you'll have to choose to accept the risks and do your best to minimize them. Did you dump your belt on the ascent?
At least you got in the water.....I had some guys collect a motorbike i sold on ebay yesterday and jumped on it to start her up.Foot slipped off and as i was wearing sandles my toe connected with the serrated footrest and sliced the bottom of my toe off.Luckily managed to stick the flap back down but certainly no diving. Utterly gutted as i'd arranged to meet up with a guy who was taking his rib along the north coast hitting a few new spots. Livid!

Went fo another night dive last night, not as good as the night before but still great fun, no catches, just massive shoals of small pollack. Unfortunaltey my go pro wide is rubbish for night diving im wishing I had got the normal version now, as you can see from the footage it narrows down the torch beam and washes out the subject.

no such thing as a bad dive, but its difficult to describe it otherwise!
I have been itching to dive my new fav spot! but it is a swell magnet! I thought today would be ok, but after hiking in, then rock hopping to the shelter inside the point (I would usually swim) got in and swam past the surf. It was just a load of hassle, and ended up getting out even further from the cliff access and had to rock hop what seem miles. Legs were like jelly when I got back to my Van!

A good work out for the legs but nothing else!

re. these freedive course what is the damage £? Is the focus SWB or they more than this? Where across the UK are these courses offered? I guesse you need a deep pool!

No i didn't. I was ready to though but i was already positively buoyant by that time. Most of the diving i do is usually no more than 6m so if i dived with a buddy the fish would never come in with someone lurking around up above. I would like to do some deeper stuff but that would mean a 1 up, 1 down approach! I think that if most people are honest about their buddy,.. well, would their buddy see them black out? Unless they are watching from above probably not! Most buddies are close but doing their own thing. Before the onslaught starts i know there are a few who do.:t

Managed a dive today and was surprised to find a lack of bass. I saw more mullet than i could shake a speargun at, and as it look grim for bass i took one of the medium sized ones. I later found one sunning himself in a sandy clearing. That was the only bass i saw (not counting the 6inch one who was very brave!)There seems to be more bass on the north coast than the south coast at the moment.

When i use to scuba dive i used a (excuse the spelling) kawalski(??) torch. To make it ok for filming i got a different inside which had a diffuser to spread the beam out wider. It worked well.

Pav, the courses i have seen lately are advertised here up at the top of the screen. Slghtly pricey but then it is stuff we need to know. I have mentioned it before but i read alot from the Manual of Freediving by Umberto Pelizzari. There is some very useful stuff in there.

Great book to have. Contains a few gems of info.

Went in today on the south coast. Too quiet for my liking, only a couple of mullet whizzing about. No flatties either - I hope the red tide did not make them go elsewhere. Nice vis though.

Talking of red tide, I bumped into someone whose fisherman mates claim a lot of scallops beds have died-off on the South coast due to the algae bloom. I am taking this info with a pinch of salt for the time being but it is a scary rumour.
