Morning all

so ive tryed to search info on the beauts on db but had no luck. im pretty new on this site and probilly not looking in the right place. Ive only speared 3 - 4 months. mainly bass, mullet, pollack . never seen a flatty either !! anyway . im cornish . MOst of the fishing boats in my habour have the name " dory " in there names. ive seen pictures , ive her stories - not many . so where do they like to hang and how to hunt them ? are they in the deep .. are skittish - shy . and more importanly how do taste !!!!!! ive herd WONDERS about this fishy

normally found among "Rocks and weeds of shallow to moderate waters tend to be favored, although fish are reported to depths of 200m. John Dory tend to be solitary fish."
 
I have seen them whilst diving but did not shoot them , you would need to get them side on to present a target as they are very thin from above or head on ! I am not sure how big they get but I doubt they have much meat on them ,I have seen them in fishmongers but they were also small ,not sure what [if ] the MLS is ? They are pretty cool to watch though .
 
I have caught them to over 8lb or a rod, my brother hand speared on once that was around 6lb but like most fish they are hard to find nowadays.....

8 POUNDS ! beautyyyy on rod !!! was that coastal angling ? or from a boat ?
 
From a boat, from a mark called the great bank, it is a sand bank about 1/2 mile from the shore.
I caught the 8lb one on a set of mackerel feathers so not really a deliberate catch!

About 5 meters ,last time I saw one was at Hope Cove in S Devon last year amongst the usual kelp/rock etc , they are not easy to spot as I said they are slender and from head on they would be a very small target !! I remember thinking how their shape and long fin spikes must make it very difficult for any potential predator (bass ? ) to eat them .
 

Hi,

I shot one season before last which was in about 4 metres but high in the water feasting on whitebait with a juvenile pollack shoal. Weedy kelp covered ground.

I've only ever caught 1 on rod and line.

Caught on sandell in about 18 feet of water within about 100 yards of the shore.

I have only ever seen them on night dives, and all three of them have been in a variety of depths 2-8m sandy bottom, kelp, string weed or large rocks. Most of them at one dive site and the only one that I have taken was a site less than a mile away.

The deeper it has been the larger they have been, they tended to be very aggressive when I saw them and instead of swimming away swam straight towards me !

The one that I have taken was after careful consideration and conflab with my dive buddy on if it was large enough, it was and it was one of the nicest fish I have eaten. On the other hand as I dont see them very often and more often than not they are too small I usually leave them be.

I usually see a few small JD's from season to season generally in the same area trying to blend into the kelp and have only ever speared one good sized fish in about 9 metres and it did taste good.
They make a grunting sound when you lift them out of the water.
 
hey fella's and lass'es ..... after going for a fish today and having no luck on the mullet and bass front or JD 'S , i took home a pollack for some battered fish and chips . when i gutted the fish i found brown worm like creatures in the flesh . ive seen these on a few occaisions but dismissed any thought about them. could anyone explain to me what they do/are anf its ok to be eaten ?
 
They are more than likely Roundworms. To put it simple mammals like dolphins, whales and seals carry Roundworms in there intestines and they obviously crap in the ocean, small fish and crustaceans eat the larvae/eggs that were depositied in the sea, then they may be eaten by bigger fish ie your pollock, then the bigger fish may be eaten by other seals and dolphins etc and the whole cycle starts again.
But dont worry they are harmless as you kill the parasite before it can enter your intestines by cooking the fish, unless your into sushi you will probably have an itchy arse in a week or two

SO ...... has had any fishy activity recently ? any bass etc . post up . ive got a long night ahead of me .
 
Bit late in reporting but got in friday a.m., seams like the mullet have decided to venture out from the esturies, the sea was full of the little blighters. After 1 1/2 hours ended up with a plump 3lb mullet and a sweet 2 lb bass.
