1st caught all 6 species (bream, bass, cod, mullet, flatfish and crustacean) they had a cod of 15lb+ snap the spear.
2nd team caught 5 out of 6 species but landed a 5kg pollack and also the biggest flatfish
A few bass around the 7/8lb matk were caught and a red mullet.
Not sure about the others. Me and Nobby came 10th out of 22. We had a bit of a nightmare dive really with Nobby having a 2lb+ bream rip off the spear I missed a bass around 4lb and we both saw mullet around the 6lb range but they were very skittish so shot of before we could get a shot off.
Most divers ended up diving the bill with average depths of 20m and some even hitting 28m I think. All in all it was a good day and a fantastic BBQ hosted by Picassouk, with all of the fish lobsters and crabs being cooked on the BBQ along with meat salads and a fish/crab Thai red curry

Got in at long last on Saturday night. Was going to have a scout around but as tides were not good just decided to head over to Ringstead to cover a bit of ground. Got in at around 2130 or so and swam from the reef down to White Nothe. Vis was a few meters close in initially, then started to clear up with only a surface layer. once under this the vis was as good as i have seen it for a while. lots of small flounder and pollock about. Saw one good size mullet down the far end. Then on the way back I hit a spot where there were dozens of small flounder and then I saw some big rubbery lips in a layer of dead weed on the bottom and nailed a 2lb2oz Sole. had a look around this area and saw lots more flounder and then nailed a 2lb10oz sole.
On the way back saw one small bass and a smooth hound but nothing worth shooting. had a "chat" with a couple of anglers on the way along who thought I would scaring their fish away. but got out and had a nice chat on the way back and all was good.
Saw a couple of spearos who had been in during the day but hadnt seen anything and a guy, Logan, I think it was (you will know who you are!) who was getting out at the same time as me (0100ish).
So a good evening well spent but would have liked some silver!

managed to get in lots this weekend, went in at newtons on friday, but left the gun at home and tried out my new camera housing instead. There was about 5-6m vis and found a couple of reasonable sized spiders for the pot amongst the loads of smaller ones.
went in again on saturday day around weymouth and saw a fair few smaller bass but nothing takeable. Headed to ringstead sat night and headed west along the shallows but the vis was disappointingly only around 1-3m, ended up with 2 mullet and my first lobster. Shoulded have gone the other way seeing those sole mike caught....
sunday kayaked out to the middle breakwater where the vis was great around 8-10m in places. lots of mullet about and a shoals of mackerel but only saw 1 smaller bass, so just came back with a couple of mullet:S

So I had to come back fron st ives for a week yesterday but car blew up on the A30. Couldnt rescue alot of things from the car but managed to get all my kit, gun and go pro, (the 15inch macbook pro slipped my mind). Anyway I really want to dive this week to make the most of the conditions so if I get the train into weymouth would anyone be kind enough to introduce me to a couple of spots on portland? Never buddied up before but I am a competent swimmer/diver and I feel I am ready to take on some more challenging environments alongside someone with experience. Pint payments only.

Hi all, I'm moored up in Portland marina and thinking of going for a dip in an hour or so - I'm guessing castle or chesil cove? My first time in Portland - anything I need to be aware of?

Alan and I, decided on a quick last minute dip last night. In the water at 8pm and swam most of the length of chesil beach. Exit from water at 5am.
As for fish.....well we won't be going hungry. Bass everywhere!! Spent the night ignoring 5lb mullet and 2-3lb bass in order to pick off the better fish.
Both alan and myself managed several good bass 3-4lb, some 'flatties' and I pulled out a donkey bass for good measure.
Seen several large salmon; one into double figures that swam into Alan and dwam inches from his speartip to tease him. Good job alan is such a well behaved boy.
Best one of the bunch 7lb on the money:

Be careful of the tides around Portland. Ferry bridge the tide either goes from the fleet into Portland harbour oR the other way around. In Portland harbour there are several sandbanks to watch out for if using a boat as it gets shallow quickly. Chesil the tide moves left to right or right to left and as there's no swell there won't be any undertow. Just watch out for anglers tho and keep an eye on your position as the tide goes up Portland aswel. But the cove is sheltered and you may see shoals of mullet or the odd bass around there
did a night dive last night not far from had 2 lobsters, my first. 1 bass 1 pollack, 2 flounders and a ray. Saw at least 15 rays some huge and some small. Most productive dive yet for me..
Many thanks Scoob - you're a gent (I'd rep you but have to spread the love). Had a really nice dive in the Cove - amazing viz and stunning views along Lyme Bay in the evening sun. Sadly I didn't see any fish for the table, but some friendly jumbo wrasse and lots of other things about.
Thanks also to the other spearos I spoke to after - really friendly and helpful with more suggestions - great to feel welcome in someone else's patch.
