I'm thinking of this Friday afternoon or evening for a meet up (Biblos on Chambers Street should be easy enough for all to find, open to suggestions), and if the weather is good then a trip over to try our luck off either the rocks near Dunbar Harbour or something similar on the Saturday?

Was out looking for scallops on the west coast on Sunday, both murky and choppy at the minute... Did come across a large skate and thought about taking it with the knife, but instead we just looked at each other and came to an understanding

Anyone else out last weekend - any good spots?

M

Hi, I'd be well up for poppin by for a beer & say hi- Biblos sounds good

Another future rv possibility could be the Sheepsheid, duddingston- back of arthurs seat- fantastic pub, with beer garden & car parking, I'd be heading in from back of Musselburgh.

Was out this last weekend with Michael (Mabster), at Seacliff, Tantallon, water surprisingly clear & sheltered from the big easterly, no fish yet, but the lobsters have arrived

Friday sounds fantastic.
I have class in the afternoon but shall be free come 3pm. Low tide in the evening I think so another lobster session?

Mabster - you intending to go diving for lobster on Friday or Saturday?
I'll aim to arrive at Biblos at around 5. I'll bring my chart of East Lothian too.

I'll be easy to spot, I'll be the one wearing a camo open cell and cressi fins....

M

My appologies.
I read that as a possible session after the meeting.
Saturday it is. We'll discuss the plan on Friday.
I like the look of Biblos. 30% Discount for students! :O rofl

I'll be the one wearing shorts and looking a bit hot from cycling over..

Ah yes, It is cheap, but not necessarily fantastic
Main thing is it is pretty easy to get to (the Sheep's Heid is a fantastic pub though, and we should probably do our next meet there...). See you all on Friday, and with a bit of luck the weather will clear and we'll be somewhere fun for Saturday!

M

I'll be down on the south coast this weekend so hope you all have a good (fishy) trip on saturday. I'll be around next weekend and would love to get out then. Keep in touch and I hope the sea and hangovers aren't too rough on Saturday.

Good one, see u guys there @5ish

-I'll be the shabby one in boots & bermudas

Just been looking at flash earth and it certainly looks rocky around Dunbar. Images are all from low tide and the rocks to the west of the harbour look interesting. As do the ones out into the sea opposite the harbour.
What do the charts say Mark?

Dunbar has potential - I dove the onshore bit - The rocks near the old gunnery position are shallow and not fantastic - kelpy and with some gullies to around 10 meters. Pretty but not amazing hunting. Might find lobsters and a rogue fish or two, when I was there there was plenty of wrasse but nothing tasty. It is sandy bottomed but I could not see anything lurking. I am interested in the outer rocks because they are steep backed and deeper, they are also in the tidal stream so the fish life should be better too. I've not got the chart to hand, but there is a seamount east of Dunbar called Sicar which is pretty much guaranteed to be a great dive (it is about half a mile offshore though, so expect it to be a boat dive!). It is about 15 meters deep, 45 meter deep on the sides, and the size of a football field. Kind of like the Bass rock but underwater and without the birds. Definitely a spearo place

See you all on Friday!

M

I'll come along on Friday too. It'll be really good to meet the few other strange folk that inhabit the waters off the east coast! I should be free on sat as well if there's anyone going out.

Look forward to meeting some of you.

Ben.

(I'm the blond one with a wee bit of a beard, but probably another hot cyclist!)

I'm generally around Mon-Fri during the week, although next week i'm away for 3 weeks due to some well earned holiday.

How about we pencil in a DB meet for a weeknight week starting 30th May?

long time no see (or sea)!! if i'm around and not workin I'm in!

The more the merrier!
I'm hoping to get wet before it and on the saturday too. Offshore winds so vis should still be good.
If any one is free on the friday and fancies a wee lobster sesh let me know. I'll be out in the afternoon before bar time.

Hello all,

Good to see you all and a good dive session - Better luck next time, this one was definitely a victory to the lobsters!

It occurs to me that some of us are not used to diving with buddies, so in the spirit of friendly advice I'd like to suggest a few pointers - take them or leave them as you see fit.

1) Buddy up, and stay with your buddy/buddies
2) Watch them dive and trail them if you can (yes I know vis is terrible, sometimes you can follow the bubble trail)
3) Wait for them to break surface and breathe before diving yourself, it will usually be a near surface black-out if it does occur

It is not a sermon, just grief prevention. It can go wrong just ask around. I know two freedivers who have blacked out hunting, most of those who have done this long enough know someone who did not come back.

A most fun day.
I didn't go that far out 50 mins of constant swimming there and back.
I was wondering where the hell everyone was.
A good current out there pushing a few knots.

But, very sound advice Mark and diving with others is something I am not used to. On the rare occasion I was with someone back home we all dived seperate areas.

I'm thoroughly looking forward to getting out again.

Cheers.

I'm heading out wednesday for either a low tide session at Seacliff for the lobsters or a spearo sesh at Torness for some pollack.
As Ben doesn't have a gun I am thinking lobster action would be better and you certainly see more at Seacliff.
The rocks are covered in Dead Man's Fingers and the caves full of squat lobster. I saw about 6 lobsters that day I was there.
The area where the big cross is seems to be best but it all depends on the swell. It looks to be offshore so should be good.

Low tide shall be in the morning and high tide late afternoon.

Are you free on Wednesday Mark?

Cheers

Michael

Wednesday, I should be there, just got batteries for that torch- so looking forward to illuminating some crustacea!

and Mark- thanks again for saturday, great spot! wise words on the buddies, I guess its reconditioning the solo when diving with others :chatup

A morning session then? Those lobbies better watch out.
