Anyone been having any luck recently?

Crabs have been my highlight recently, where's the fish gone :-(

I recently had my first experience of BIG mullet and spent a few days trying to get one but contrary to everything I've heard about them they were really flighty. Tried everything but never got a decent shot - very challenging.
Anyone ( safe & experienced only ;-) )fancy a shot on the East coast next weekend drop me a pm - thinking Beadnell / low Newton maybe.

Grant

Good luck Grant! A number of cod have been pulled out of Beadnell this week with the chop on the water!! Hope the weather clears for you!

I will be up come September and will try to get out as much as possible before term starts! Safe hunting

Dave

Reckon this weekend will be a bit of a write off Dave after all this rain now- viz will be poor inshore i'm guessing.
When you say Cod are you meaning rod caught? Never come accross another spearo down there but Cod are certainly achieveable off the point.

Were you up in the summer? Meant to give you a shout but time seems to have flown by. Give me a shout when your up next month if you want to head out for a swim.

Hi all

Been a fairly surfy summer east coast this year, but recent SWerlies water cleared up- had a good pollack jam yesterday with south african joe 40 mins south of edinburgh. Good spearfish with a few nigh on 10lbrs, viz patchy with plankton. A fine morning had :)

40 mins S of Edinburgh? You must have been in my neck of the woods.
How was the vis?

Just past pease bay, vis 5-8m v patchy but cleared up deeper down. There is a slight wave chop building but the big pollack are most certainly there :)

From now until late Sept. Is certainly the time for the big Pollack.
I'm heading up to Fife this weekend but give me a shout next time your down this way and I'll see if I can meet up.

Cheers

Re: Freediving Lobsters

Hi guys,
Just catching up on this topic, good to hear some interest in Scotland. I'm over on Bute, not really much fish to see, actually none! Visibility has been terrible of lately with plankton blooms all over the place.

I'd love to pick up some tips on how you go about hunting down the lobsters?

What's the general technique for finding them, I assume I need a good torch for starters and tickling sticks etc,. Any advice would be great. How do you guys on the East Coast do it?

cheers

I've had an extremely disappointing summer spearo wise as I haven't gotten wet at all.
Been extremely busy doing course work and renovating a lovely cottage (Opposite a fine spoot location).
Fingers crossed I get out with you Pete when I'm down.
Looks like I'll be down on the 10th sept so I hope there are still some fish !

Good to see you're all getting out.

Cheers

wow mabster, spoot cottage :) sounds like paradise... just need a point break into that bay and im moving up there too! Look forwards to a catch up in sept- also bens just tooled up (90cm gun & hungry for fish)

hi terallan, east coast lobster catching, not much to it really, eyeball how far the creels are out (the lobbies come shallow june/july), but they should give you an idea of where they are. Look in the back of caves/holes/nooks and grab em :)

Mabster had a torch earlier this year, it made a big difference, so I got one too- though not used it yet. I tryed making a hollow tube & noose (like how some divers catch the spinies abroad) but these smooth europeans often slide off, easier just to grab em. Dont take any gravid females (lots of black eggs underneath) & think about where you put your hands, never heard of any conger trouble but if their teeth are back pointed like a moray's the thought of hacking through 20cm of clamped eel neck on one breath is a tad harrowing :crutch

Yup, good times

Hey guys, just signing in to the Scottish/NE England thread to say hello!

I will hopefully try to get out with some of you before the weather sets in for the winter!

Cheers

Hello, I'm going with my buddy to Scotland for 3 weeks, any good places to freedive? I've seen some videos, the Quarry in the Lake District doesn't look but to far from where I'm going to stay.
Thanks
Monica

Someone in this thread that can point out some spots near Tarbert? Mull of Kintyre?
Thanks,

Hi pals,
i'm Andrea from Italy , exactly from Elba island the third island in Italy. I'm 25 years old and decided to move to Edinburgh to learn english and looking for a job.
but i love spearfisching in Italy i usually went four times a week and here it miss so much.
i love fisching in 3-4 meters ambushing looking for sea basses sea breams and gilt head, because i believe that you can caught good fishes without go down many meters. Spearfishing it's quite dangerous sport, in Italy every years died lots of divers so do spearfishing but with careful. Anyway sometimes when i m fit i try to caught grouper and red snapper in 15, 20 metres.
So i arrived last month and i would like to go fisching near edinburgh, but i haven't idea about the fishes here, spots, about the water's degrees..etc i heard that i can do it only in the summer so now the water it's too cold and that near edinburgh there are a lot of lobsters..
so can anyone give this notices and maybe we can meet up for a pint

Best regards

Andrea

Hi Andrea

Welcome to Scotland :)

You're correct that the season here tends be concentrated on the summer months but we can get a longer season into Late Nov/Dec and start as early as March if we don't get storms and wind stirring up the sea and leaving poor vis.
This winter has been poor so far due to lots of wind and swell. I've not made it out for a night dive at all which is disappointing :-(

I think my fins will be hung up now until April unless we get some really settled weather and some good vis.

The main species you will find on the E coast are Pollack, flat fish, lobsters and Cod. None of them require particularly deep diving, although tbh I've not had much success with Codling so I may be wrong regarding them.
I've only recently started targeting codling fishing from my kayak and am by no means very knowledgable about them but I know a few marks that they are certainly plentiful at 10-15 m so there is no reason they can't be successfully speared. Maybe others have had more luck on the E Coast with Codling?

I'm sure there will be plenty opportunities to get out with some of us on the E coast next season if you are still here?

Cheers

Grant
