WOW!!!

sting 44,

I have to thank you for that post, that was great reading, not to mention a terribly biased/skewed interpretation of the last five years of no-limits diving. Simply Brilliant. - Jack
:hmm

what the hell is an unofficial record? if its unofficial its not a record.

and if you are talking about no limits, where is Loic?

I reckon Loic is one of the best, but there are loads of other contenders not on the list. Like you say, its not just about depth, its about aura, and inspiring others safely too. For me the greatest freediver is the one who looks most at home in the water. Not the one who grits his teeth, looks scared to hell and plummets down just to get the record..... and I saw a few like that in Cyprus. In my own personal greatest freediver competition there would be lots of points awarded for style and grace both in and out of the water.

and thanks Eric - Deepest Bear loves the idea of being called Yogi Bear!! he is bugging me to change his name now...

Loic has done at least 175m, Murat at least 180m.... and Murat has been doing 180m+ since 1998, back when the 'record' was 133m...

HOT TUB ?

Sting44 -

I'm interested in the hot tub story - I'd like to follow up on it with you if you were there and witnessed this first hand.

Cheers.

There are also many different records that one could hold besides "No Limits" such as:

Constant
static
variable ballast
free immersion
dynamic with fins
dynamic without fins
Crazy Cuban/Canadian (whatever its called)- that event where you swim up and down naked without using fins/rope/sled.

I would think that the "Greatest" would be able to post records in many different areas. I would think that they would also "test their metal" against others in competition.

Audrey never did any of this. She stuck with just one area. Granted, she was still a much better freediver than I will ever be, but we are talking about the "Greatest" after all.

Umberto has done much of this and stayed with it for a long period of time- he was my first pick. Now, Martin looks like he might be able to it one, or two;) , better if he sticks with it.

never had a chance to

To Jon:

If being great at many types of dives is the criteria, I'd go with Mayol. He could do it all, and with ease I might add. Audrey Mestre unfortuneatly didnt really have the oppurtunity to try different aspects of the sport. Thats my point. Yes she primarily made a mark in the "No Limits" area of the sport, but I was just trying to point out that with the way she was excelling in this area, I think she would've excelled at other types of dives as well, its just that she was with Pipin all the time and that was not really a good thing. I think if she would have been around people who were more pure at heart, and tried other types of dives I think she could have blown our minds. If you've been following the poll though, she has gotten alot of votes in the past few days and has almost caught Mayol. This discussion is great though, I love everyones input and comments. :)

hi

Yeah but pellizari is still the man, remember he once helled the consant 80m, variable something like 120m and the No limits 150m all at the one time. He was very good at all disciplines

cheers

Audrey

Sting 44 is on the "money". Audrey may have developed into the best ever. Unfortunately, we can only speculate now. Great discussions. Also, I may be a bit biased...I'm Cuban and a big fan of Pipin.

For the deepest diving, it's hands down pipin, he may not be the most versatile as a lot of you have been talking about, but that's never been his focus either, his focus is going the deepest ever. I also say that he's better than audrey at this, this will be prooven when he goes for his 558ft dive that he is planning now.

IF your just talking deepest, that title already belongs to Loic.

Vote

I voted for Pipin. After reading the article in sports illustrated about him and Audrey I really love this guy. He has an amazing talent. And I know Audrey would have set more records also.

I hope Pipin sets another record next month. I will be watching!!!

Umberto Pelizzari & Martin Stepanek - humble champions

I actually have 2 choices -

Although I haven't met him personally (yet) I would have to say based upon reputation that Umberto isn't only the greatest freediver of all time, but he is a great person who is modest in his accomplishments.

This praise includes talking with Bob Talbot, Director of Oceanmen, whom I chatted with last year at DEMA about Umberto.

If I had to choose a current athlete, I would say that Martin Stepanek is my choice for having accomplished what he did recently in Cyprus and still have a level head on his shoulders. And again, from what I hear - he is a really nice guy to boot.

But hey, those in this poll are all great champions in the freediving world.

Best for themselves or best for everyone?
Of late, I say Tanya Streeter is the best. Not because of her impressive record dives or budha like concentration.
Simply because she is working hard to get freediving into the
vocabulary of the average person. The more people that dive the
easier it will be for the rest of us to get sponsors. Also the greater
the demand for great gear the more money will be put into designing that gear. I want great public divers to bring our sport into the lime light so we all benefit.

Le petit Francais...

I would say Jacque mayol, I guess even if a lot might not consider him as the best of all time is for sure part of the great history of freediving and a huge influence on even today's freedivers.
He has become a legend a myth...
