Would have been a better pic if you weren't wearing the scary mask Mart :t

Managed a solo night dive tonight on the last of this session of good tides. Looked for some flats (what else) on my newly discovered secret spot. This was where I saw about 20 flatfish a couple of weeks ago.

Long swim and a very dark night saw me searching around for the right patch. Eventually found it with some difficulty, although plenty of fireworks on shore gave me a good idea of which way was land. Been to "secret spot" 3 times but although there have been flats haven't seen any size reds. SO I was suprised to see a single big red mullet straight off. Swiftly dispatched it later went 2lb on the scales at home. Knew this was too good to be true 'cause an hour and a half of hard diving later the only flatfish I managed to find were 4 smallish plaice and that was it. Took the 3 biggest for a feed and also took a half decent pollack to supliment the catch.

Loads of squid about at present, although still only medium size, but getting bigger by the day. Give them a month and there'll be a few 5lb+. Loads of cuttles as well and they seem to me to be extra jumbo this year. Don't shoot squid or cuttles as I find them so fantastic to look at and not a huge fan of eating them.

Back to work tomorrow - bugger.

Dave

I went in on Saturday just before high tide at the spot near Ed. Appropriately, "Radar Love" by Golden Earring was playing on the radio as I arrived ( I been divin' all night, my hand's wet on the gun ... neerw neeerw na neerw neerw neerw...)

The vis wasn't brilliant and all I saw was a large mullet tail disappearing into the murk. The camera bracket worked well, so now I just need something interesting to shoot. Trouble is, I only have limited video time with a max. 2GB card, so I'll have to be lucky when I have it running.

Nice fish Dave. They had some big ones for sale at Alliance on Saturday.

At least it wasn't rough!:) Tides look good next weekend, but the forecast doesn't ...

In friday night up north as planned

in @ 17:58
out @ 19:39
49 dives
15C
max depth 4.7m 39 secs

Very few fish around 1 red of 1.5lb and a sole of 2lb. I was thinking how the bays differ from one another in that there were no small sole at all yet in other bays there are almost hundreds. Saw lots of small white bream in the shallower spots and lots of cuttles. Missed a red mullet because I took too long aiming!

Bad news though think I have buggered up my ear:rcard I had a pain on one of my dives early on, but carried on with no pain. Last night bent down to pick something up and - pop squeak click and the 'cathedral' sound :rcard:rcard:rcard

Maybe increasing sea temperature (global warming) is having an effect on our fish as well as these trawlers? I don't recall seeing species such as the white bream before (whose northern limit is widely reported as The Bay of Biscay)

Just been for a dip down south, amongst the bootlace. There were quite a few good size bass and some mullet around. For me, this was a whole new experience, I've never had so many (missed) opportunities - I actually felt that there were fish around to shoot! Loads to learn, but also lots of practice today, tried the sit on the bottom and wait method, and yes, the bass do come swimming right up! I still missed several times and also - I'm sorry to say, I hit one but it got away - I'm not proud about that. Also tried stalking in the bootlace and again, encountered several fishes, even when on the surface.
No piccies and no dinner, but I am really pleased with an eventful swim and an awareness that I need to improve my aim, and to figure out how to do longer breathholds (max 47secs, average 35).
My Ice fins are working great, much better than those short bright yellow ones I had :) Over 2 hours in the water - in my surfer suit.
btw grob, I found a wetsuit hood that does help a fair bit with keeping warm but the wetsuit still flushes, got an elios mtm on order, should be here in time for Christmas...

GBO has been inviting anyone to join him at Beau Sejour on Monday evenings for a bit of static and dynamic training. I can highly recommend that as a way to build up your breath-hold ability and confidence in a relatively safe a protected environment.
It's also great to meet up with other divers.

PM him to see if he'll be there tonight.

Another cheeky threadjack from the other side of the world:

Friday:
40 dives, 9M and 1:27 max. MURKY, like diving in a bowl of oxtail soup. Couldn't distinguish fish species from 2M away!! by the time I could see what they were and valid shots they had sped away. I was quite furious but that made me more determined (hence the 40 dives!). I eventually learned to stealth through the weed until 1M away and shot. BBQ and ceviche! great.

Saturday:
17 dives: 13.5m, 1:17. Clearer as was in more open deeper water. Ocean bottom stunning (always is in this spot) huge boulders and tallish Kelp canopy. Drag through canopy using free hand. The roundish fish shot from about 5m head on, only presented tiny target. My best shot to date I think... Using Omer Cayman.
Most stunning thing about this day was finding a speargun I lost two months ago! As I mentioned, it is open water with strong currents, and the find was amazing! It was "hung" from the bottom by the spear, wrapped around the weed. I literally looked up and there it was. I almost crxxped my self. It was about a 3" diameter bobbing around, all built up with seaweed. Freaky thing is the local commercial fisherman, with hooka, had looked for it without luck. It shows nobody else had been there. I estimate it was less than 10M from where I had lost it. Easy to know now with hindsight.

Here is story: http://forums.deeperblue.net/spearo-board/73661-more-lost-than-found-bye-bye-gun.html

Jonny if you want to keep warm in the mean time get a shorty from Aladdin's cave about £19 & wear it over your surf suit.
Azapa that was lucky, lovely backdrop in the second pic.

Hey Azapa nice pics and nice story about the gun.

Colin aka Sarnian lost a flipper in august, I found it in October! I found it 200m from where he lost it and the place where it was, the current whips through you can't swim against it even!

weird how things happen

Happy Halloween come bonfire week-

Nice one Foxy and Foxy Lady! You should have quit while you're a head!rofl

Jonny, hard luck - at least you saw some though, more luck than me recently!

Azapa, interesting to hear about completely different experiences.

Nice carvings mate, I struggled to tell you and Foxy Lady apart from the pumpkins! All DIY? roflrofl

Should be worth a watch. A couple of the lads off the dangling forum helped him out and fed him weird things like sea anemones...

Hugh was down my neck of the woods in good old BRIXHAM on a trawler . from what ive been told he cooks the things most of us would stick our nose up at so should be really good.

fed him weird things like sea anemones...

they eat those here although have never tried them. the locals fishermen call them "potos" or bums as they say in the UK. :yack

now, red sea urchins are genuinely yummy.

Well it was a good watch for those who saw it. Some strange methods like trying to catch a longnose on a spinner off a boat in deep water, almost as hard as shooting one with a spear while blindfolded...

A highly entertaining hours worth, no interest in the limpets and anenomes though!

You should go up to Alderney and show that Scottish chap how to build a proper cold smoker Mart.

Not to sure about the Limpets either, but yes it was a good hour.:)
Mart cold smoked Limpets?????
