It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
No pics of my own, the canoe now lives in the south of France.
Maggers I dont know that much about these yaky things but I would recommend a polythene one over ally or fiberglass.
I know this company's rota moulded boats are amazing. Marine Revolution. Q-Kayaks Products Page

Sarnian, mine is fishing mono, about 200lb breaking strain with appropriate crimp, loop for the weight belt and a loop through the spike, once there's a fish on I just feed the spike back through the loop on the belt and pull tight, the resistance from the fish being pulled about will keep it in place.

Hi ADM

Yeah, that's what I do, though I have had problems fiddling about getting the spike out of the loop while grappling with fish, so I'm going to try putting it through a metal shackle instead.

Whether to use nylon line or mono appears to be a matter of personal preference, so I may try out a mono one for comparison - assuming I get to catch anything in the near future!:)

Why put it through anything? With the fish on the line the spike lies as a T piece against the fish.

When its got not fish on it I slip the point of the spike into a tiny loop tied from dynema that friction fits over the point, so when I need it its just a tug and its ready for action.

Hi All

Back in the land of grey and cold. Great trip. Spent every day at least 2 hours in the water :) :)

The air temp was 30c and the water was similar. The beach at the hotel had a small coral reef just offshore perfect for snorkelling and full of parrot fish, angel fish, snappers, squirrel fish, puffer fish etc etc

Managed 3 tanks on an offshore reef one day where we were treated to barracuda, stingray, spiny lobster, moray, nurse shark and huge vase sponges as well as coral coral coral.

I have not dived coral reef before and found it 'interesting' it was not awesome though. Much browner than I was expecting and the fish whilst plentiful were on the whole small. The weirdest thing was the total lack of seaweed of any type.

The tank diving was sureal though. We went out on the boat for about 3 miles straight offshore and anchored next to a reef in 18m of water with the top of the reef coming up to 2m!! It was the temperature though that was the most amazing. You sit on the boat in t shirt and shorts, put a tank on your back, do your 40 minutes under water, come out and air dry still in t shirt and shorts in 15 knots of wind without feeling in any way cold!!

I even managed to convince my wife to do a PADI course followed by a 10m dive on a reef, which she said was the most amazing thing she has ever done!!!

Despite all the fish there was actually very little that I saw that was shootable though.

Andy

ps Thanks again for the guard of honour it was a huge surprise and an honour. I have some picks which I will try and post later

Some pictures as promised. Unfortunately my camera flooded:head so didn't take as many as I wanted.

The fish stringer discussion - mine (if I ever get to catch fish again!!) is on my bobber. Its attached via a snap shackle and heavy fishing swivel with a s/s ring to keep the spike tucked away so it doesnt get caught in the weed.

I have just received my omer ice fins - now we just need some better weather to test them. According to the BBC weather it looks like Thursday and Friday are going to be good:) :) :) .

The weather has really annoyed Marco & his family who are also here for a weeks diving. However it has not stopped them going & catching!! They were going to try for scallops today.
Just goes to show what wimps we are!

I am thinking about a social in my fire house on Sat 1st Sep. Not sure if it will be girls & boys yet, it will depend on how many are interested? If we can start with boys only & see what happens? Just thinking about some basic food, a few beers & of course a fire. :)

I'll have cricket either here or in Jersey, if its here I'll be there, if its over there I'll have to see what time we get back but its usually about 9pm.

Maggers you are always doing something strewth aren't you fit enough? Any how I am sure someone will still be here at 9?

The gut says no, not fit enough! Yes, usually doing something, which is making me wonder if this kayak is a good idea, lot of money for it to be used twice a year!

Anyway, will know where I'll be after this weekend, but will come down when I can whether its from the airport or home.

Hi

Ive noticed that the Guernsey forum is big on posting pictures but ive not seen any underwater or video with gun mounted camera's. DO you guys do or at least have tried this before.

Im working on a rig which I will be testing on Friday afternoon and was just wandering if any1 on the forums does this.

Cheers Martin - count me in of course - and Mrs Sarnian if girls too. I think there might be one or two still around at nine!!:friday

( Cricket to keep you fit? The gut must be from the tea interval and beers afterwards!:t )

Great pics Andy - I think I would still have had an itchy trigger finger!

Would love to see some more of the Guard of Honour - were there any "official" ones?

A fire sounds like a great idea. Count me and the wife in (if its girls as well, although technically she is now a diver as well!!) Am hoping to get to France this weekend on the boat so will pick up some wine :)

Colin I did make some imaginary shots at fish, and when the guy taking us on the reef dive pointed out a spiny lobster, I was in there like a rat up a drainpipe!

There are some official photos although I have not yet seen, will post when they are available.

Andy

Went in on the falling tide this evening 'down home' Bloody cold it was as well!! Compared to 30 c of the carribean Swam around for nearly 2 hours.

I know falling tide etc I didnt catch anything. Bumped into Marco who had a bad day, only caught 1 bass this morning.

Have to say the viz was much better than I imagined, could still see the bottom in 7m.
