You weren't where I was were you Tom? I fired twice ( and missed) - did it sound like a Mamba 90? I did check for other people, kayaks, boats etc at regular intervals, but didn't notice anyone. How far does the sound travel?
( p.s. if you've also been known as TJ I know a young chap who you may know, who plays hockey, and spears much better bass than us, the little git, but doesn't seem to post on here!)

Out at Rousse this afternoon. Seen bass there every time I have been this season except today. Always been at low tide and thought I would fish it on the way up but obviously the fish prefer it low. Saw a huge amount of sandeel. Everywhere I went I was within viewing distance of a shoal!
Anyone got any good high tide marks? everywhere I have been seems to fish better at low water, regardles of which side of the tide.

Had a great night dive last night. Flat calm moonlit sea vith 25 foot vis. Trouble with this time of year is it's not dark 'til 10pm.
So walk down the beach at dusk and in an hour after low. On the way I had a chat with a worm drowner who was plagued by crabs, well not him personally but his bait. Told me he had a 7lb bass last week. I should be so lucky.
Swam out and passed a very small bass shining in the torch beam. Saw 4 small gurnards and some very small reds, all of which have the amazing colours you only see at night.
A few small sole were mooching about doing their soley things and a few assorted size plaice were keeping them company. Had to do the usual sorting through the plaice to select the bigger ones. Found a couple of small brill and took one and also took half the plaice leaving the rest to grow. Smallest plaice was size plus an inch or two up to the best at nudging 2lb. No records but just the best eating there is IMHO.
Out at midnight-ish and home to shower and bed. Struggled to get up for work this morning. Must be getting old(er).

Wow nice catch Dave. Are you likely to see any of these in the daytime? I has of yet never seen a flattie, apart from a possible sighting years ago, even though I have done some deeper dives onto sand at the likes of grande havre and south coast marks. Would really like to get a few but rather do it in the daytime as I dont want to shell out £X on a diving torch!

Nick, you can get flatties during the day. On very rare occassions you come across the odd uncovered plaice, eh Ed, but mostly they're buried in the sand so you go along the bottom prodding suspicious lumps.
Look for sand that has no worm casts or clam holes in it, or areas were the natural pattern of ripples seems disturbed or flatted.
It's a lot of diving to find many during the day now but they are there, it just takes a trained eye or a bit of luck.
When you do prod a lump that feels rubbery, don't panic, they do not swim away, or not far anyway. You do not have to shoot them, grab your gun buy the bands and shove it through firmly (that's why all Dave's have "head shots"). Make sure you then grab your spear on the far side of the fish as the sand underneath it can often stop the flopper engaging (top Foxen tip there for you).
Now night diving is a whole different world and if you can save up for one you'd be amazed how many are actually out there. They don't have to be stupidly expensive, Dave uses the Princetontec Shockwave LED which can be had for £80 and is just fine.

I went in again last night, compelled after seeing OMD's super catch.

I also saw a blonde ray, my first one seen and a fair sized lobster and a cuttle.
also a couple of small red mullet, a small bass and several pouting.
I ditched the gun in the end; i have sharpened my stringer and just string the flatties straight on.

Just had a look at the tide/swell forcast, looks ok for the weekend; anyone up for a dive on the South coast - i was thinking of kayaking around in the direction of les tielles or thereabouts and seeing whats out there, maybe just in some of the coves to start with and to get to know the area. Anyone interested?
Have you deliberately picked the furthest spot in Guernsey from any access point Jonny? If not you did well as the Tielles is a 5km paddle round from Portlet, or 4.8km coming the other way from Petit Bot.
Comfortable range for you I've no doubt, indeed that's about how far you got when we went in from Petit Bot last year, but I wouldn't have fancied a dive having paddled that far myself!

The ground round le long cavaleaux (the big arch thingy) looks superb at low water from the rocks. Massive boulders and kelp forests... Was considering fishing down that way on Saturday actually.
