well adoptive spearo thread friends (sorry, but there is no "Chile" thread, and if there were I'd be there all sad a lonely)
this little fella was at the mouth of a cave in 18M, we had great viz this weekend, about 20M and spotting the fishy hiding places was easier than just dropping down and mooching, as I do nearly the entire rest of the year.
at that depth I'm freefalling from about 14M, I saw it and turned 180 degrees and fired on the fall itself. Not the best shot (body) but she would have bolted otherwise. It took me an extra dive to extract from the tiny hole she bolted into.
weighed in at 7kg, an equal PB. On filleting duty tonight!

thanks for the rep guys! Jonny, i will answer with caution as I feel (and have read) the call of the deep in your posts :martial: it's as deep as I want to be spearfishing right now as I often go alone :rcard:rcard
once you have equalization, weighting and relaxation sorted out, depth is not the issue, it's more safety.
if your getting tired legs (burning) and several contractions on a spearfishing dive, it's too long..

Went west again today. Weather has been kind of late but I just seem to have too much on my plate lately and sad to say, spearing which should come first is taking a back seat. Soooo... instead of most days, I'm barely managing a dive or two a week.
Today it was smooth seas, almost mirror calm. Well apparently so. Off the head land I was on there was a big lazy swell. Didn't look much but I could hear it booming which is usually a bad sign. Sure enough it was about 3 or 4 foot but it was straight in from America via the Atlantic ocean. Vis was okay close in but shot to hell in the swell.
Only saw a few fish but managed a couple of bass for tea. No records just the usual 3 pounders.
Hope to go tomorrow and also hope to go somewhere out of the swell. Maybe a night dive in a few days if the weather holds.

OK all you shellfish experts! The aforesaid crab, from the Amarreurs area, turned out to have blueish- black meat after being cooked. I killed it first with a spike through the spine and mouth, dropped it straight into boiling water, cooked for 12 mins. left it to cool outside then put it on a plate in the fridge. My nephew by coincidence also gave us one from a pot in the same area, which he had cooked, and which was even blacker (see pic). Both crabs were full of eggs, by the way.
Any thoughts? Should we eat it anyway? Is it something wrong with the cooking/ something they're eating/time of year?

I'd have to be pretty damned hungry to even consider eating that Col!
The blue-blooded Fort George brigade,which doubtless includes members of the blue-rinse fraternity,have their own exclusive sewage outlet, I believe,
so maybe your crabs have been feeding in that area!
Don't even touch that stuff with a barge-pole is my advise!

Only allowed to go for an hour today 'cause of tea time :rcard. Found a sheltered spot with no swell. Vis looks so amazing in the shallows but isn't. Still I was stealthing string weed so not so important.
First off saw a shoal of bass averaging 2lb or so with the odd bigger one. They were on the tide edge of the weed bed. Only seen this once before in this same spot. On that previous occasion I had hunted them down the tide and got 3 or 4 of them if memory serves. No such luck today as they vamoused quick style. Could have got one of the bigger ones but was a bit slow. That was going to be the theme for the day although I didn't know it then.
Through the beds I saw about 15 bass, all singles. First one I saw I got but from then on it was downhill all the way. Fired 2 more shots and both clean misses, including a point blank shot at the best fish of the day that might have made 6lb. The others all offered potential shots but I was just too slow and in the end probably just a bit too frustrated.
In the end it was a nice dive, with a fish to eat, a fine few fish seen and I was even back home for my tea all within the hour.
Thinking about it now I have not done a lot of spearing this year and maybe I just need to get in a little more practice. Now there's a good excuse.

You picked the right spot there then Dave!
I spent 2 hours cruising round the jap weed inside the knife in the fog and didn't see a single bass. Viz was pretty average but diveable.
Was trying out my guncam mount on the triaxx which worked well, shame there was nothing much to film except loads of sandeels.

I have pretty much finished the new boat but the Honda agents cant find time to service my motor until next wednesday week - still glad to be finished.
More news - Marco will be here for the first week of July as will his brothers, so I suggest you get your bass now while we still have a few left!!
