Two questions for my book

1) How close can a person get to a cuckoo wrasse, and what behavior spooks them?

2) When ormer are underwater, do they stick tightly like then do when the tide has receded, or are they easier to pick up?

Cuckoo wrasse seem to be almost tame from the vids I have seen but they live a bit to deep for me to dive!
Ormers do move around the rocks but will clamp up as soon as they sense any danger.

I've had male cuckoo wrasse swim up to me repeatedly when diving deep on scuba and they appear almost tame. I think from reading up though that they actually might be being aggressive. I think they are trying to scare you off as they are guarding nests of eggs and you are getting too close. This seems to fit their behaviour at least some of the time.

Popped in tonight for another quick dive hunting bass. Saw loads of mullet and a few bass. Just took one bass which was the biggest I saw but was only 3.5lb-ish. Still not brilliant vis but flat calm and plenty of life down there with wrasse and bait fish as well as bass and mullet. Might night dive soon if the weather holds.

Dave.

Gave fish to big bruv so no pic.

A bass is a bass!! And a 3.5lber would have been more than welcome last night after the last 10 blank fishing trips I have had...

Well done!!

Water is an odd coffe brown colour in Belle Greve at the moment though supposedly they are not pumping short anymore it doesn't look or smell that way...

I have pretty much finished the new boat but the Honda agents cant find time to service my motor until next wednesday week - still glad to be finished.
More news - Marco will be here for the first week of July as will his brothers, so I suggest you get your bass now while we still have a few left!!

The boat -

Looks cracking mate! Can't wait to be lying in it with a can of cider in my hand as we sedately motor to and fro. We can shadow Podge in it and I can hurl sophisticated abuse at him whilst he splashes about....roflrofl

It’s a big bass angling competition this weekend.

Only once every 2 weeks is there a day when the tide is perfect for a night dive. Last night was the night but factor in weather, sea state, sunset times etc and opportunities are few and far between. Despite the imminent longest day and therefore night diving not starting ‘til 10.30pm I decided to go, after all it was a Friday and time is running out (for old men). So went out to try for a few flats in my favourite night diving spot, having suited up at home.

Got to the spot but although the vis would probably have been okay the wind was straight in force 4 or 5 and a sea was running. It was fishable but not nice. Plan B was move to the lee coast (easy in an island). Did I mention the bass angling competition? Second spot was a small sandy cove except it had little twinkly lights all around. Loads of anglers head torches. Talk about lit up like Christmas. Plan C was a not so good flatty spot but more “chance of a bassy” spot.

Got to plan C spot to find … Did I mention it was bass angling competition weekend? Actually the beach was clear but they were gearing up in the carpark. Went over for a chat and agreed to enter the water first, then cross “their” fishing spot and bugger off further out and away from them. They seemed okay about it and I told them I’d be looking for flats and not bass (had my fingers crossed on that one).

In the water, the sea was calm and vis was okay, fishable but not great. Straight away saw bass. Mainly schoolies, but a fine sight, fins up, bristling in the reflected torch light. Forgetting momentarily my promise to the anglers I was tempted but decided not and moved off. Did I mention it was bass angling competition weekend?

Moved half a mile away from the pesky anglers, did I mention it was …..? Looked for flats but no luck, plus was distracted by all the bass and Pollack. Selected a few good ones and left some size but small ones. Also saw all the usual nighttime suspects and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

As I was heading back ashore to land a long way away from the anglers (and then have to walk miles) I saw the “lights” leaving. They must have caught them all. Did I mention….? This saved me a walk and as I arrived back to the car some other anglers turned up, did I mention …? They looked at my catch and we had a good chat. There was no animosity, in fact they seemed encouraged, especially as I shared knowledge and anyway they were after the “big one” to win the competition, not after a feed (like me).

Seems to me that we should be open about our catches and not afraid to show them off to other fisher persons. I don’t say advertise or flaunt your catch but personally I am not ashamed of the amount I catch. I selected my fish last night and I left some for another day. That was my best ever nighttimes catch of bass and today they will be shared with my family.

Dave.

Nice one Dave!! I also heard there was a comp on but I was the only person I saw fishing ?? I must have been in the wrong place for after 5 hours of dangling, all I had was this poxy gilthead... Bloney things keep pinching my bass baits. Starting to P me off...:rcard Kidding!! Any other weekend I would have been chuffed but I wanted a bass. Went 3lb 5oz.

The bass comp is being led at the moment with a fish of 9-2 (or was it 9-3) second currently something in the 7's. Two good fish considering poor conditions for dangling.

Nice one Andy. I would have traded all my bass for that one but not if it meant diving in Poo Bay, which I guess it would have.

Dean T. on 9+lb and our own Stevie G. on 7+lb is what I heard.

Going to try to finish maintainance on my boat this weekend so that's me fisnished spearing beside have a few in the freezer :).

Dave.
