Thought it was about time I ordered a fast find personal locator beacon to take out spearing with me as a safety precaution.
I know Jonny also has one and uses various other parts of safety equipment.
I was just wondering what safety equipment and precautions the rest of you boys take and venture out with??

Happy Liberation Day, my friends!

Of course, it's not Liberation Day from where I'm writing now. But it's your liberation, so its your day. I'm toasting you with ale now. And when it is 9 May over here, I'll just toast you, again.

Hi Mart

Yes my job is safe, we are busier than ever in the boatyard. Hence the reason I have not been in the water much this year. Hope to get in this weekend and looking forward to the fish in though. Have you been in yet?

Was in Cobo at low water today, loads of swell and surge, almost zero viz.

That is good news Sarge :) No I have another month before I can get in!

Ah that will soon fly bye Mart.

Got in after work today with Jonny and had decided to go looking for flatties as its something I had never really done. Saw a couple of nice sized bass over the sand and missed a shot on them! Was on a drop about 15 mins before we got out and bingo spotted a plaice which came along with me. Viz was pretty good over the sand but not great closer to the rocks, considering the winds and swell we have had it was surprisingly good. Not the biggest plaice but plenty legal. Really happy with that. :D

Well done Sarge, for me, a fresh plaice on a plate is one of the wonders of this world!

I do find it sad though, up until maybe 6-7 years ago, plaice were reasonably common!
Before then, plaice were "very" common & a staple part of my diet!

The very first fish I speared was in fact a plaice. I was about 12 years old and we were on holiday in Alderney.
My dad has recently died but OMD took charge of the family boat & he navigated us up to Alderney for a weeks holiday.
I remember it being very rough seas on the way & the motor breaking down but most of all I remember snorkelling around the boat mooring.
We set anchor in Braye Bay just below the low tide mark, you could see the plaice from the boat swimming past with the rising tide.
Of Couse Derek & Dave had no problem feeding us all with prime fish however my contribution to the table will never be forgotten.

Impulse dive at 6am, my 2nd dip of the year, viz was ok'ish in most places, only saw a few spiders, one of which was a decent sized male, I dived down and grabbed it, turned him upside down to which his pinchers easily manoeuvred themselves to try to nip me, dropped him and he disappeared, the others were pregnant females so left alone.
Loads of Rockies around
My Gopro dive case opened at some point at start of dive, managed to find the camera in the shallows, that is the end of that, in the airing cupboard drying out in hope it might work again
Took a shot with my new Riffe padauk gun on a mullet, the difference in power to the beauchat was pretty impressive, still missed the b@gger though :)
Currently have a torn ligament in my ankle, nearly better, the swimming helps a lot, clambering over rocks doesn't....
Can you grab the big male spiders by their arms,? turning upside down and swimming quickly back up works for some but not all

First dive of the year this morning - offshore swim with Fabio, bit of a marathon coming back in but good fun and reasonable visibility. Lots of wrasse and mullet seen and a few lone small bass at the back of the mullet shoals (all left).
