South Devon 2013

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Meadfoot was 3m last night, will be heading out later to take a closer look.
Probably heading to South hams tomorrow as I think the viz will be slightly better than the bay, and more bass!

Any update on vis reports anywhere between Torbay and Plymouth? Been a bit poorly for a few weeks so been out of action for a while.Got a kayak now too so am looking forward to doing some exploring of new spots, got quite a long list!!
Cheers.

Just had a look in Torbay and at high tide vis was 3-5 metres but a scuba diver I spoke too said it was only 2 metres further out . Well done on getting a kayak Dai , you can follow me to all my crap spots now !!! Avoid major headlands at the moment ( big tides ) I have found my kayak ( tarpon 120 ) to be superb for spearfishing and rarely go without it now ! I may go in at Torbay tomorrow , depends on wind direction Terry....

Cheers lads.
Here it is. Can't say I know anything about it at all as thought for 50 quid from a colleague, having a kayak was better than not having one! Won't be in a position to afford to research and choose one for a while so at least can get out and about in the meantime, and as you say Scott fun and no on-costs.
Terry, would be happy to follow you to a crap spot, can't be worse than my last attempts!!
Looks like I was being optimistic about getting in today, will have to go in after work in the week. I've been reminded that there's a lot to do, ha.
Cheers.

That will get you out to the better spots matey. I have a 25 meter line attached to my weghtbelt and then to the kayak good for drift diving spots with stronger tides.

Theres a fair few of us now with kayaks I reckon a meetup one day for a few hours divng around the bay is in need and an ice cold beer on meadfoot green afterwards

Spearfishing and beer, 2 of my favourite things. I'm in!!!

Couple of night dive reports. nothing massive but still enough to feed ourselves and neighbours.

first night teignmouth way brown and zero viz so headed over to the bay and found a sheltered spot. Walking along the sea wall there was a frenzy of activity, masses of bait fish jumping clear of the water. viz was 1m max but surrounded by thousand upon thousand of bait fish, hunted down by hundreds of mackerel. Amazing site watching the speed of the fish. came across the mullet weighing 4.5lb, then found three bass cruising the shallows took the smallest 2.5lb as the other two were too quick. With worsening viz turned my attention to searching for crabs to no avail but did stick my head and torch into a old sewage pipe, face to face with a conger of about 10lb!! christ what would a fifty pounder look like up close?
mullet last night in beer batter, enough for four adult portions.

2nd night headed to the south hams to a spot i've dived many times in the day and screams bass but always disappoints, well at least for me it does. searched the shallows and close into the rocks taking a few bass but nothing of size seen.

winds picked up and away this week so no dive for a week or so.

happy hunting everyone.

Good fishing Scrumpy !! I have not seen (or had ) many mullet this year , not that I specifically search for them ! but just not seeing as many as usual !! Was in today at a spot in the bay I have not dived before ( and probably will not again either ! ) vis was 3-4 metres at high tide but very few "takers " seen, hunted for crabs as well, found quite a few but all were too small so left empty handed , covered a lot of potentially good ground adjacent to another more productive area but it did not produce this time !! Terry....

Terry..

Seen on quite a few occasions large shoals of mullet along ? (let you know that one)incoming tide, almost like dolphins riding the waves. We have been stood on the beach watching them through the breaking waves. Would put money on bass being nearby as well.

Hi All,

In solo last night. Conditions were great - cloudy into clear patches but lack of fish. i saw one donkey mullet all night and it came home with me. Not good. No diving for a month now, off to Florida.
Tribs
out

Taking gear in to work with me tomorrow with the hope of a dive afterwards if conditions look worthy enough to give it a go. Hope to try a new spot or 2 tomorrow as will have the luxury of no time pressures which hasn't been the case for a few dives it seems.
Won't be giving the kayak its maiden voyage though as want a few attachments to keep loose items secure that am yet to get.
Cheers, D.

Brixham dive yesterday evening. Generally only 2m vis but stretched to 3 in places. No silvers seen and didn't even come across any crabs of takeable size. Good to be back in the water though.

Hi Guys,
I am just after some advices! I gonig to visits some friends in Exeter and if situation allows I am planning a dive this weekend! I have been only in Thurlestone area at the moment but with this south-westerly wind I don't think it is a good idea. checking maps I am thinking about East of Torquay, east of Brixham or Hallsands. Any vis report or advices about these areas? Thanks Dai for the info for Brixham! Fishing usually in South of Wales, 2-3m vis is hunting ground for me :martial
Cheers
Marco

Evening all,

After a bit of heads up re: Vis. I've been out of the country the last week and just got back today. My brother (DafyddRees) is coming down to visit this weekend and was hoping to jump in somewhere dorset / devon way. I've not been looking at the weather here in the UK as I have been lapping up 38 degrees in Italy instead. I'm guessing that these southerly winds have been here all week have they? If so can anyone point me in the right direction of the chance of finding any vis?

Cheers

Nick
