South Devon 2013

It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Finally got in the water at Watcombe this afternoon and it was not too bad at all. Got the new gear to sit properly in all the right places and was quite surprised by the water temperature. Vis wasn't great ranging from 3 to 9 feet and took me some time to realize the jaws soundtrack playing in the back of my head is not necessary in UK water. Saw a fair bit of life and took one home for dinner. All and all a pleasant dive for my first one in 13 years...ready to give it a go again next weekend.

Got a dive in over the weekend after a two week break due to the weather. I got in at the start of the flood near Plymouth. There wasn't lots of fish but I managed to bag all the take-able bass that presented themselves. I saw some shoals of Allis Shad too which got the heart rate going. I've seen the odd Twaite shad in the past but these were much bigger, about 50-60 cm and quite thin. They moved super quick and were really spooky. They were over sand at 12m and only came in at the very end of my breath hold. I saw some sea trout too. Such a shame that they are on the naughty list as they are a delicious eating fish. Sea looking flat in Teignmouth this morning so possibly going to give some east Devon marks a go in the week.

Lewis theres decent viz over the sand banks at the moment and plenty sand eels so no doubts the silvers will be in a feeding frenzy in the evening. You free tomorrow around 6pm im out on the boat so theres a space going

Yeah man. I'll meet you at Polly and help you launch. Cheers Scott, got the makings of a good dive there. Wreck in 15m not far from there too !

Ive fished that wreck mate so if theres no one on it I'll take you out there. Bring ur big float so we can drift dive it.

Speared my very first fish this morning. Cheeky mullet at Sidmouth. Vis was cracking at about 6-7 metres, this became less as the tide came in. Think I'm slowly learning.

Spent 11 days camping with the family in South Hams. Variable conditions and a bit quiet on the bass front so I spent most of my time shooting mullet which are very popular with my family. Suprising lack of big fish but i had enough in the 40-50cm range to keep us all fed.

Highlight was a close encounter with a sunfish while kayaking :)

I was paddleboarding at sandy bay today. From the surface, the vis looked really good further out, loads of seaweed on the beach and in the water closer in.
Met a spearo heading out, he seemed to be enjoying himself for a few hours, wasn't out by the time I left but said it had been quite fishy over the past few days.

Think I'm going to head out for high tide tomorrow (my sis is staying at the caravan park so couldn't really today)

Dived a spot in Torbay today (vis was a lot better than when I was in last) been there a few times and never noticed any spider crabs. There was quite a large area of the seabed covered in hundreds of them. I m guessing it must be mating season? Is there any laws/etiquette for taking them during mating season?

bigger the better males really bigger claws more meat.flip them up side down n bag them!Have you a BIG pan?

No I think I will have to invest in a big pot. Is there any meat on the legs, or is just the claws?
Can you detach the claws to fit it in the pot?

Best plan on all counts is just to take the males - bigger claws and no loss of potential baby crabs. If you take a male away from a female there will be plenty of other males only too willing to take his place.
I make it a general rule only to take males over about 3lbs as they are a lot easier to pick than the smaller ones. In fact males of this size can be picked very quickly once you've had a little practice.

A few 50cm mullet for a few family meals on holiday in Swansea. Mullet elude me at home so these a pb, anyone guess the weight as I have no scales here to weigh with?
Cheers, D.

couple of night dives. 1st had produced fish for another spearo, so getting good vibes. first 5 minutes 2.5lb bass on stringer, whilst dispatching something large and silver flashed past me. Excitement building carried on and that is as good as it gets, murky poor viz and nothing seen for next two hours!!

2nd dive dropped in missed a donkey mullet, reloaded to come face to face with a huge silver head coming out amonst the boulders, 6 inches max you guessed, missed it. How who knows you wouldn't think it was possible, at a guess 8lb now really p****d off. Carried on and started to find fish, some nice mullet but the bass weren't of any great size but again feeding us and friends tonight.
New stringer in order mullet look a bit worse for wear, to many kinks in it.

photos upside down again, taken on I pad so must be holding wrong way, thought it takes them whatever way up it is? Anyone any knowledge will ask around.

Hi, I used to post occasionally on the cornwall board but been quiet on there for a while, moved to devon this year, i've been in at Anstey Cove and Sidmouth, was looking for some nice fairly relaxed/quiet spots if anyone could pm me some hints. I did get a lobster down in Torbay but otherwise haven't really put the hours in tso far, Cornwall has been good on the Bass and mullet front. Also tried to get hold of Exe Spearfishing club but got no reply, is this club functioning? Are they worth contacting? was just really after some local info.
