Static Challenge

hi

yeah thanks man. Funny thing is in the afternoon today a mate and I went out to do our new hobbie of fresh water cave freediving, in the cold water I tried a static and could not do more than 1:10.

cheers

I'ma bit confused about these "contaraction" when I did my PB of 5 min as far as I know I didn't experience any of them, what do you think?

Have the same thing. My personal best was 4:53 and never ever had any contractions. Have asked this question before but never got a convincing awnser yet.

Some say that i am not yet doing it long enough (just a couple of month's now) and once my body gets used to the training / starvation i will get them.

Maybe Erik has the wisom to explain this.
Will we get them in the end or are we blessed forever not to get them. (Not that i kow which is better , since i still have to give up because i feel i am dying , but then without any contractions)

Greetz,

Glenn

hi

manta99 and glennv

If you don't get contractions how do you know when to stop holding your breath?
When i do dry static at the end of it i get very hot and i feel my HR getting up. And don't forget contractions! At the end each contraction raises my BP. I can feel that in my eyes (i see white wall in red color).

Hey there Ivan,

Be careful doing those statics on your favorite chair at home. I've heard that some people faint or have a dry black out. Then you go into a samba and you can pee in your chair. Therefore, don't ruin your sofa and place a towel under your butt! rofl :hungover

cheers

Zipy,

well that is the thing that interests me the most and therefore i need to know feedback from as much people as possible who also do not have contractions, what to look for when you are getting close to the edge.
Since you guys feel how close you get to the BO / Samba on the number and spacing of contractions, i do not have that mechanisme.
I am getting better in ignoring the urge to breathe, but have only very limited queue's on when to stop. The only thing i have at the moment is some feeling like exploding of overpressure in my head and lungs near the end. Also after about 2 sometimes 3 minutes a continuos sort of tintling in my guts/bellymuscles, but this is of little use, since this does not get any stronger near the end. If i do wet statics this belly tintling is more a continuos fibrilation (like shiver from the cold but then in the belly area only.
Normally i just preset my static time at something i am sure i can do and just stop when i reach this and slowly adding seconds after some weeks.

Greetz,

Glenn

Get yourself a good buddy (or two) that knows how to bring you back to live if you pass out and just go for it.
Then you will know where aproximatly your limit is (at that time).
And if you are lucky you will find some sign that will tell you when you are close to your limit. Look for small changes.

Listen to your body

Zipy :)

These are just my opinions.

Good luck!!

I have talked to others who do not experience contractions, and I don't have any explanation other than the fact that this stuff is all new to science, and that even then, science doesn't have all the answers.
I think that if you can pull off a good breath-hold that you feel good about, whatever your physiological reaction, then more power to you!
I believe DSV trains to NOT get them at all, and he's doing 7 minutes+ , so I certainly wouldn't try to get them if I didn't get them.
That said, contractions are a good indicator for me in most circumstances, and I have come to expect and even appreciate them.
Cheers,
Erik Y.

i've met 2 people so far who started out with getting no contractions but after 4 weeks in one case and 3 months in the other case they got them.

i also asked when they would finish the static , and the answer was simply 'until i can't hold it any longer'. makes sense, doesn't it?
signs of imminent samba/bo (in my case): tingling sensation in arms and/or legs, narrowing field of vision, and a massive urge to breathe. at the end of a max static it gets really physical, i have to struggle keeping the air inside. but that is also made more difficult since my contractions are getting quite strong at the end.

zipy, you say:

Get yourself a good buddy (or two) that knows how to bring you back to live if you pass out and just go for it.

please be careful!

wet statics offer a greater possibility of complications during a recovery from a bo! means that anything out of the ordinary 'i'iiwakeupbymyselfanyway' situation will very likely require more than just a buddy to keep your head out of the water.

aquiles

that's the reason why i'll probably switch back to doing wet statics again. you can simply let go without the need to explain much afterwards.:D

happy breath-holding everybody

hi

Ha Aquiles im hunting down Andrsn's 6:15 static shouldnt be too long till I get there hopefully. BTW Aquiles have you ever tried a static you could probably do 6mins easy when you look at your hunting depths.

break of the apnea

At the end of my apnea (pb 5.25) that is over 4.30 i begin to count
like this
6, 12, 18, 24... to 60
7, 14, 21, 28...
8, 16, 24, 32...
6, 12,...
At the point that counting gets hard, that means, where my brain is keeping me alive instead of doing all kinds of thinking, i break up my apnea. It is always at the limit, if I continue for 10 sec : samba!!

Perhaps you can try

The problem with methods of counting or visualization is that the brain itself consumes a large amount of O2; much more if you think hard or complicated thoughts.

I heard that your brain consumes 30% of your O2.

The lowest O2 will be consumed with an empty mind.

Eric ,

As an expert in freediving physiology , do you have any info/tips for me about me not having contractions ?
Also maybe some idea's on how to keep it safe without the contractions as a more reliable warning signal.
Like you said , i need to keep my mind clear of thought to get my better statics, so counting feels to me a bit couterproductive.

hi

Mate do dry statics so you can test your limits as well as dangerous things like hyperventilation, this is how you delay contractions simply be lowering your co2 levels.

cheers

Ivan ,

See my earlier postings. Delaying my contractions is not the question. I have NO contractions at all.

hi

immerlustig
I meant dry statics (i only do dry). It is much easyer and maybe you don't get as good resaults as you would in wet, but it is defenetly safer. Iknow that there can be complications in dry statics also, that is why a buddy (or someone to look after you).

Thanks for your warning.

Hi guys

I've been inspired to join the challenge after a new pb of 5:00.
even doing some apnea walking with my girlfriend to train.
next target 5:30 by the end of feb.

something intereseting i found while we were walking. my girlfriend has just started apnea training, and her pb is 2:30. when we walk we say, this lamppost to that one inhale, or this to that one exhale static. i can beat her very comfortably doing the inhale statics, but with the exhale we are very closely matched. is exhale the great leveller or am i just crap?
be honest, but be kind.

cheers
Mark

hi

griff
This could mean two things:
1.your lung volume on inhale static is much larger than her is
2. or since she has just started doing statics she might be good enough to catch you very soon:D :D

Hey there Ivan,

I never really tried to push myself doing statics. I don't know how well I would do right now anyway. Im stressed as hell and working on three to four hours of sleep a night.. I just hope that I can get in shape fast enough to kick ass in kk 03. I need to really make a good showing this time, I did not make the grade last time. :blackeye I only got to spear one grouper and a tent. (long story, lots of alcohol)

Later
