Good stuff Tyler. It's hard to be sure when you deal with a translation out of context but we agree on the meaning.
My best efforts have come with long hard warmups and I'm amazed that you can hold that long on the first try. The fact that there are many ways to get very good results, seems to indicate that there is a lot left in human static performance.

New PB

5:10 was my last PB in static on June 27th which I proudly posted. This has been the longest time, in my short freediving hobby that I have gone without a static PB.

In dynamic Sunday I finally turned the corner at 50 meters and made 75. With all the amazing accomplishments lately of fellow board members, especially Bill’s static who made me believe I’m not over the hill yet, I have been getting real motivated. Today I did 6:00!

To succeed, first you have to dream!

Don,

Excellent job and congratulations on the 6:00!!!! Was is it dry or wet? Either way, you definitely have me blown away with that time.

Scott

Scott,
It was dry at my desk. I worked the first 4 minutes, and then looked up at the clock in shock! It’s a good thing I wrote down the starting time or I might have convinced myself it wasn’t true. I did 4 minute on the previous hold and usually stop there, because I hate the pain of several sets; but this time I decided to do one more, thinking if it got difficult I would stop.

I think I will be able to match it eventually in the pool. I relax better in water, if I have a spotter I’m confident in. I’m waiting to push one in the pool until my warmer suit comes in. I get cold easy when not moving.

Keep training, because I have a dream for April in Florida, but I need you to do your part too!

Good one Don. I don't remember the first 6 but the memory is good enough to recall the first 5. It's probably better to look at the steps but those minute markers feel so good. Any time your thoughts wander and you lose track of time it helps your performance. Wish some one could come up with a method to get into that dream state. Never would have tried working though.
Do you use three warm ups before a max attempt? Do you overheat when doing dry statics? We've been using 80-85 degree pools and it felt good in a pool that was 'only' 78. I was told that one of the best experimented with ice cubes on the face. Maybe a cold face cloth would help.
congrats
Bill

Bill,
Thanks for encouragement. I try to do 3 warm-ups before max, but that seldom happens because I get interrupted at least once and have to do another one. Since I am getting paid, I feel I need to stop and answer the phone when it rings. More than once someone has said, “you sound different!”

I think learning what works for you, really helps. I got a little warm the last minute of the breath hold today, but the heat was up in the building. Yesterday my hands were freezing. I get a strong blood shunt and get cold and turn blue real easy. Another thing I learned is I can’t fast. At the performance clinic they encouraged us to not eat from breakfast to 2:30 one day when we did our statics. Even with 5mm on I got so cold I was shaking and couldn’t warm up until I ate something and got some blood sugar back. I’ll gladly take your 80-85 pool!

Do you use a nose clip? I use the Paradisia clip for dry statics, otherwise I forget what I am doing and breath through my nose. It also helps me handle the contractions with less effort. Martin Stepanek said he uses a nose clip and goggles for wet statics. I am going to give that a try.

Bill, what is your PB’s in other disciplines? Been wondering that for a while.

Keep it up - you’re my inspiration!

Next time you get a chance, try no food for 4-5 hours and a spoon of honey just before getting in the water. I forget who mentioned that. It works for early statics after not eating for 10-12 hours.
I started by accident but now it is more comfortable to do my warm up with a dry face and my static without goggles or nose clip. With a hooded 3 mm suit, booties and a 20 minute warm up, chill is no problem here.
This year I was often limited by sinuses and a little disappointed with the progress on the PBs.
dynamic still 92, constant 170 feet, free immersion 218 and static 7:12. I also did over 4 minutes on a gentle free immersion and on a full negative but failed to do two 7 minute statics in 17 minutes.
Aloha

honey?

Can someone explain the advantages of a spoon of honey just before getting in the water please?
Ok, no food for a couple of hours slows down your metabolic rate, so less oxygen is used. But doesn't the honey just bring the metabolic rate back up?

Fred

Fred,
I believe the honey is to increase blood sugar, and no eating is to eliminate the body extra energy and blood oxygen needed to digest (increase metabolism). Not eating can decrease blood sugar to levels in some people that greatly hinder their ability to function and perform. Honey can restore that for the short period of time needed to do statics without adding much digestive strain.

Hi Fred,

As i know honey is for energy. I mix 7-8 tea spon honey with bottle (1 liter) of tea, and carry it on my float works great when you need back up. And reduces pain when your throat becomes dry. But i don't use tea anymore coz last time it upset my stomach. From now on i will start to use it with water.

I know this is not freediving related answer but at least keeps your stomach happy

That's funny! I think I started the honey thing and now everyone is doing it.... Usually have mine after a dive tho..

Deepest,
Did you know that Greek athletes in ancient times used to take about a jarful of honey before competing? Your kind of people!

Ok Jody!

My PB at the moment is 4:15 dry. I haven't had a chance to practice wet statics for a long time due to lack of a buddy/pool. I either had the buddy or the pool, but never both! Tonight however I'll have a chance to give it a go. Our local freedive club (Freedive Toronto) has pool practices set up for the winter now, and tonight's the first night.

Also want to try for a new dynamic PB....

My PB`s is 6.40, but that was 3 years ago, when i was training for competitions (i never competed thought, due to missfortunes)...Now i can get times around 4.50 to 5.30,,without any formal training. Just frequent dives in the sea...

In the past 6 weeks I increased my static PB by 10 seconds. It has been the first improvements in a 6 months period.
My personal best was 7'30'' (set on May 15th).
On November 7th I did 7'31''.
A few weeks later 7'34''.

Here is how my last three static training sessions of the year went:
2003-12-11:
4'00'' (warm-up)
7'19''
7'31'' (122 bpm heart rate)
7'37'' (133 bpm heart rate)
7'30'' (144 bpm heart rate)
Probably the only human being who ever hold his breath for more than a 1000 heart beats.

2003-12-12:
4'01'' (warm-up)
7'04''
7'06''
7'22''

2003-12-18:
4'01'' (warm-up)
7'20''
7'19''
7'40''
7'23''

There are roughly 8'-10' breaks between these 7'+ statics. A few months ago I did only 3'-5' breaks. I think these longer breaks to come down and breath-up propperly work better for me.

"Probably the only human being who ever hold his breath for more than a 1000 heart beats."

...that's quite a bold statement! do you have any evidence to support that claim?

i'm not sure how you measured your heart rate, but some heart rate monitors and pulse oximeters can give inaccurate results - sometimes they can count one pusle as two etc. i once did some static breath holds inside an MRI machine as part of some research experiments. during the static my pulse went up to 178bpm and was over 150bpm for 2mins! towards the end (~6'30") it did drop down to 50bpm though. i know my pulse was fast but it almost certainly wasn't that fast. Eric Fattah told me about these spurious HR readings. maybe he will want to add something if he reads this.

I don't have any evidence that there isn't anyone else who did statics that long with a 130+ heart rate. It's just that everybody whom I talked to about their heart rate during static claimed they have a low heart rate (i.e. 50-80 bpm average). If you know another person who's doing static for that many beats please let me know.

You got an interesting point about the heart rate monitors. I also thought about it. However, I am quite sure that it measures correctly because sometimes I can feel the heart beating. It's definitely very fast. The monitor model I use is a Polar M91-Ti. The heart rate values I wrote were the average heart rates of each static attempt.

My normal heart rate is between 70 and 85 bpm.

well, the best way to find out for sure is to have someone take your pulse whilst you do some statics - and not rely on electronics - that way you'll know for sure.

those statics i did for the experiments were done about 8-9(?) months ago and i have done any since, so i've never got anyone to check my own pulse to count my heart beats.... so i can't be absolutely certain the results i got were wrong, but they most probably were... 178bpm is very fast when lying motionless!!

i'm surprised to hear your RHR is that high.

My static PB is 5'28" (dry). That was 10 years ago...Never had much chance to dive.
I never new anything about special diets, physical training, or anything other than just breathing and relaxing before holding my breath.
Now with this wounderfull web site, with loads of tips and advice I'm willing to go back to that mark and overcome it.
3 Days ago I did 4'10"
Today 4'40"
And going up )
When I stop improving my times I'll start a physical training and diet to see where it gets.
When I get there it'll be thanks to everyone in this site..
All the best
