I have been doing tables, and my PB is now 5:15!!! The only people who know about my PBs are a few friends (mostly freedivers) and everyone at DeeperBlue. I find it really hard when people get upset and think I am doing something very dangerous and useless, because I have put a lot of effort into training and I wish it would be easier to share my achievements.

More to come.....

Lucia

Lucia,
Congrats on the PB! Good work!

I know what you mean... I have a freind who I don't tell about my PB's in static anymore because he thinks I'm killing brain cells or something!

Regards,
Aaron

PPl at my school think im nuts.... lol they think 1 minute hold is godly. I can't wait until i get to like 3 or 4 minutes I'm not sure how to get there yet though.

Well I have read up to about page 19 of this thread but thought I'd just skip to the end and post my PB.

Started doing statics about 10 days ago due to the water temperature being a little chilly. Started out by doing the oxygen based one (2 min ventilate - 1 min hold etc + 15 secs each rep.) and got to 3:00 after a few days.

Yesterday I managed a 4:30 dry static - which is pretty good for me I think.

Is there any info on the effects of apnea on the brain. What happens when you hold your breathe to the brain ? You are essentially depriving the brain of oxygen - is this damaging ? I'm a little worried as around the 4 min mark my vision starts to go a little funny (everything seems a little sharper etc).

Made it into the sea for the first time this year - borrowed a hood which made things nice and found a whole load of spider crabs and also sea hares (spawning I think). Anyway - this is a great thread and I'm slowly working my way through it page by page when I should be working.... If I get fired I'll know what to blame.

It's a pitty I cannot change my vote, because a month ago I got into the 6-7min league... 6:11 is my PB.

The fun thing for me is that I can show it in competition as well, with a 5:58 I got the gold in Belgium competition in Huy.
Last wensday I did again a nice 6:08.
I only practice statics in the water, I dislike the uncomfort of the ground or bed.
Strange thing is that my static is becomming more joyfull, even at the end it's not as uncomfortable as it used to be. The fighting fase has sort of dissolved?

I consider good stanima and peace of mind and a short preperation Key parts of my latest PB.

Kars.

Congratulations on the times and the gold. Competition times are far more important than lone, dry statics. I envy you the ability to train in the water.
Will you please explain what you mean by short preparation and/or tell me your routine. Still trying to find some help for the 'fight' from 5-6 minutes.
Aloha
Bill

My PB is now 5.08!!

I was a smoker (I know i know very stupid..) I have stop to smoke before 2 weeks and it was very easy to stop.
Before 2 weeks my PB was 3.28.

So mutch about Smoking & Static

I was lucky enough to live in Greece between the ages of 9 and 13. This was in the early sixties. I lived in Kifissia and then we would vacation in Mykonos when it was still an innocent little artist's colony. For me it was a fantastic place. Then in 1975 I spent a few months on Paros studying photography and did some travelling around the islands, while reading NiKos Katzanzatis (sp?). I still remember a little Greek.

Adrian:

I am from Crete (Like Nikos Kazanzakis) Greece is not more what it was BUT there are places(like my Village) where the Greeks have them like a secret. We never have tourists becauce we newer tell people about this places
We try to have them for us, ouer children & family friends and people (Like in this forum) that love the sea and respect the kultur

I work & live in Sweden now and have found great freedivers her but I miss Greece a lot.

BUT i will go soon back and then everybody is welcome to visit me.

Hi, i have a little question about technique. Today i was doing dry statics (during my 4th hour biology ) and my first hold was 55 seconds with ease, i could went another 10 if i pushed it. My next hold was 1:05 with a minor contraction, and my next hold was nearly 1:20. I also ventilate 2 minutes in between each hold. After those 3 holds though, i started going all around, to 45 seconds, 50, 35, 1:00.... and im 99% sure it's my final hold. When i get good holds, my lungs feel great from the beginning, but i know when i'm going to do bad because i feel a tension in my lungs right away. How should i go about taking in the last hold? This is what i do now....

*Ventilate 2 minutes
*Breath out, pushing out more air than a normal breathe
*Breathe in hard and hold.

My last breathe is screwing up my holds, i need some help!

If your last breath is screwing up your holds, try doing only the normal ventilation.
The key is to ventilate slow and as little energy as possible with it.
Best is to lay down on your back, rest your hands on your belly, and breath in and out by using ONLY your belly, leaving your chest flat. The begining tempo should be about 5 sec in, 5 sec out. Breath through your nose only and try to follow the air as it finds the way in down to your lungs. Try to make the airstream constant, with a slow start and with a slow end. Try not to go to the very end positions of your belly breath, this is where you need (too) much effort to fill or empty the last 10-20%. A proper belly breath is very important, you can practice it all day if you like. It's the way to breath for humans, the cheast breath uses to much energy, and isn't -in general- benificial for freediving. It's only good for panic, fleeing, running situations, people with only chestbreathing may be prone to much stress.

Ok, next time you make your biology lessons more intresting, try to a small schedule. If your max is 1:20, take half of the time, 40 seconds as the holdtime.

Now try to complete this schedule:

2' breathup, only belly...
40" hold,
1'45" breathup

40" hold,
1'30" breathup

40" hold
1'15" breathup

40" hold
1'00" breathup

40" hold
0'45" breathup

40" hold
30" breathup

40" hold
15" breathup

40" hold.

This should a pretty tough challenge, try not to get noticed
You may find it handy to start the breath out in the last 5 seconds, slowly that is. Try to maintain a slow breathing tempo, with little effort.

Please train safe, and don't do max breathhold all the time, they are very tiresome, and you may exaust your mental will as wel. It's better to alter your days like: day 1: stanima, 2: flexibility, 3: breathhold, 4: rest. 5 swimming technique etc. Don't practice breathhold in water if you don't have a very capeble buddy which knows, and does help, if something goes wrong. I wouldn't want to find out such a accident. Breathhold while driving something isn't also very smart. See if you can follow a proper freediving course, good luck!

Got a dry static PB of 5:29 last night.

2:00 ventilate
1:30 hold
2:00 ventilate
1:45 hold
2:15 ventilate
2:00 hold
2:30 ventilate
2:15 hold
2:30 ventilate
2:30 hold
3:00 ventilate
5:29 hold

my last PB was 4:30 last tuesday. Got some contractions at 3:30 and then these sort of got bad around the 4:25 mark then I really concentrated on chilling and these subsided from 4:35 to 5:29 so that they felt just like smooth controllable waves.

Thanks for the tips, i'll work on it during 4th hour biology is a lame class! Anyhow, i just started dry statics last week, this is my first year freediving, and i've gone from like 35 seconds to 1:30 already, it's cool. Then again, i think dry statics are easier, so i'm hoping i can be underwater for at least 1 minute this summer. If i keep training steadily, i'm hoping i can get up to 3-4 minutes by September.... is that possible to increase that much? I know by nxext summer i want to be at 4 minutes +..... more bottom time rocks. I also need a wetsuit and wetbelt

Skarz, please note that al this record hunting is very energy consuming, and if you practice breathhold too much it will wear you out, you may even start to hate it.

I find the long term fun of freediving is not is doing PB's every week, nor in beating all the compeditors, it's more in the discovery of your body, mind, the enviroment, and all the different people you meet. Go easy on all these PB stuff. People won't like you more, because you can do a 2' breathhold, or a 6' BH.

Like portinfer showed, progress often comes in waves. Times can suck for weeks, months, and suddenly you've got a new idea/insight and you try it and find out it works. Your body needs time to addapt as well.
Almost any freediver I know has had his greates improvents the first weeks or months. This is where you discover very much. And quickly run into your current bodies boundries. These boundries need practice and above alle time to shift.
I started Freediving about 16months ago, but I've practiced static with my brother when I was 17. Our time shoot through the roof in ONE day at the beach in Spain where we were on holiday with our parents. My time went from a minute to a 3:42 in just 2 day's of practicing. We didn't have any guide, instructor NOR knowledge. And for certain no knowledge about safety, we just watched over eachother laying at a depth of one meter (3ft).
Thankfully nothing bad happend, and I live to tell

Safe diving,

Kars.

Oh Kars i totally agree, im not in this just for big hold times and that. I'm just trying to improve my time so i can have more bottom time this summer. I'm not into the mind and body part as you may be, i'm just looking for a fun time swimming underwater, and for the most part exploring where a lot of people never go. I just need to improve my times because a day gets boring fast when you're under water for like 15 or 20 seconds, and laying up on top of the water isn't nearly as interesting, i want to be close up. That's the only reason im trying to gain time.
