This morning it was vis was about 3-5 ft close to the beach and about 5-6ft about 200 yards out. Didn't go in though, maybe Sunday, forecast is for more wind though
Dive Report LIC Pairs Comp Portland
Many thanks to the London International Club for holding a very successful pairs competition yesterday 4th July. In a complete change from last year the weather was perfect with light winds a slight swell and clear skies with underwater visibility off Portland over 30ft in most areas. The competition was held as a species hunt with the largest of each gaining 100% and your biggest getting a percentage of that. This meant that the biggest catch of 11 cod up to 12lbs two guilt head bream and 4 bass by Gary Roach and Colin Chester did not win the dive. That honour went to Lee & Sean Deighton of the Sussex Spearfishing Club with a catch of big Bass, Guilt Head Bream, Black Bream, Pollack, Pout, Mullet and a 7lb Lobster despite an encounter with a 400lb Porbeagle shark during the competition. A lot of the divers were fishing at 90ft quite an achievement in British waters with a strong tide running but boat cover was good. The prizes donated by European Spearfishing Supplies meant that most of the top divers received Rob Allen guns for the effort they put in and the BBQ even surpassed the very high standards set by the LIC in other years. With proceeds going towards the British Team and all the fish filleted and donated to the largest old peoples home in Weymouth it was a shame that many of the squad could not make it due to other commitments on the day. A full report will appear with photos in the Autumn edition of Crystal Clear.

Dived Brighton west pier at 8 this morning vis not great about 3 meters had a lucky escape large railway sleeper fell from the structure could have been nasty definitly a wake up call to how damaged the pier is. had a bream and mullet. then moved to shorham vis was amazing easily 10 meters!!!!! had a Bass of aprox 10lb and a mullet of about 8lb found an amazing place to dive saw loads but not able to hold my breath long enough vis was almost too good!
If you look on websites of angling stores you can buy pretty accurate digital scales for 10 to 20 pounds sterling

ha ha im not really that worried how big they are as long as there are some! iv been fishing all my life and know aprox weights of fish . Thank you sunfish if that was just trying to be helpfull but all my fish are gutted on the beach so scales are of no use to me .Old man dave Im just sharing my days fishing with anyone who is interested as i enjoy reading about everyone elses days out, and even if i did weigh them what difference would it make im not entering a comp?

Most people can guess " around 5lb " , and for db reports thats good enough .
Like huntfish I gut fish in the sea , if I mention a weight it's a guess or if a long thin fish or short fat one I might put it on the kitchen scales for the sake of curiosity and give the gutted weight or thereabouts .
Owning super-accurate scales can't be a prerequisite for posting on db , surely ?
If you want to enter FOM or HOF or claim a record , thats different , but for general day-to-day stuff I trust a spearos judgement and integrity . ( except Captain J's )

Whilst windsurfing today I caught a 20lb Bass.rofl
I can judge weights of fish too but still I can't wait to weigh them when I reach shore or sometimes while on the boat. My Berkley digital lives in the boot of my car so I don't forget it. I gut fish at the sea too unless they're worthy of a photo and I've forgotten my camera.
I enjoy reading your reports, whether they have photos and weights or not, but I enjoy them more if they do. Ten pounds and eight pounds are superb fish and I would have loved it if your report had been enhanced by photos and weights.
As for spearo's integrity, well we have to trust it. Even if fish are weighed we have to trust each other's honesty. Judgement is something else. I consider myself good at judging weights of fish but I still get it wrong sometimes.

The Bass was my pb and the mullet was bigger than one i entered last year in the fotm comp (weighed on kitchen scales) which was 7lb, i didnt win:waterwork. I have a photo of the two fish on my phone but dont have a clue how to transfer it on the computer, i have scales at home but my wife doesnt like fish so preparing them for the freezer at the beach is a must for me, our flat is quite small and fish guts heads and scales especially mullet dont go down to well as u can imagine:yack . I must admit i am intrigued as to how heavy the bass was but all i know is it was definitly my biggest yet. i might get a small sprung set i can carry but would have to comprimise on accuracy . Ill make a point of taking my digital camera with me next time and see if my new spot can produce again
Well done on 2 great fish Huntfish. Seems a shame not to weigh them at least more or less accurately. Also to do justice to yourself and to enhance others enjoyment then weights pictures and stories are what we want.
However most importantly I think we must consider that this forum can be read by more or less anyone and I believe we must put forward a positive view of spearing. I know that there are some who believe they do that by not posting much info and they have said that many times.
Personally I believe we should do the oposite. When you see published caught 6 bass or caught bass about 10lb without any pictures and/or a story then non spearo's looking on the forum get the impression that this is normal because we give the impression that it's not special.
Your last post shows how special your catch was explains the lack of pic's and accurate weight. Well done for that.
If this seems a bit personal or judgemental well no offence to you. I have made my views clear before and got a fair amount of stick for it, when people have taken it as a personal insult. What you do is up to you but personally I hope for yourself and for the rest of us you share your full story with us and the wider world. If it can have weights (even approx) and pic's then so much the better.

Bit of Dorset interloping going on here.... hope you dont mind!
I used to live in Bournemouth, and I still generally head down that way for my fishing as my buddy lives down that way too. Having recently moved to nearby Fareham for work I have been doing some mean distances to try to get in the water, but having read this thread and others I am begining to realise there is a wealth of good areas to have a look at that are a little more local. I am also becoming aware that you have some different and challenging conditions around this area, mainly the tides. Buddy and I are keen to try 2 places in particular, Selsey Bill and Bognor Reef. I was hoping an experienced local might give me a primer on how to safely dive these areas, what tides to watch out for, boat traffic, and any other local considerations you think might be relevant. Please feel free to PM me if you prefer.

Bognor inner reef fishes best on a rising tide if you arrive at the lowest tide you can see the rocks heading out to the south east, these can be fished in comfort as there is no currant on the rising tide, but it will turn 1 hr before high and go hard to west. The outer reef is really a boat dive but is just a continuation of the inner rocks and heads out to sea for four miles.
Selsey has some very strong tides but the trench can be an interesting dive and can be dived at most tides but avoid 1 hr before high and 2 hr after as the tide will rip to the south. Mind you this can be used to your advantage if you tuck behind the obstructions. There are countless war time wrecks in the area but you will need to swat up on those and will need a boat for most. The post that can be seen I mile out is the Mixon bar this dries out low tide and a 100ft deep hole can be found just out the back of it. This bar attracts bass and mullet in the shallows on the rising tide but don't get caught by the tide out there as it is very unforgiving.

Thats top knowledge eric, exactly what I was looking for. Not keen on being swept towards france at all! Have been looking at the charts and was amazed at that 25m mixon hole - it just seems so out of place in the area. Does the tide massively scour the bottom there or some such?

The sea level was lower in Roman times and most of the area was out of the water I once found a mosaic floor uncovered half way out to the mixon, which must have indicated a villa. Things cover and uncover in a couple of tides in this area, the mixon hole is widely believed to be a old Roman quarry.
Anyone out there using a Spearo UK Venom Apnea off the shelf suit? I could do with a quick review or comparison to previous suits you have owned.
I've got a friend who wants to buy an open cell suit asap. He's a bit poor and has been saving his pennies for quite a while now, so I don't want to recommend anything to him that isn't up to the job, as it would take him another year to save up for something else!
