I have done a lot of experimenting with weighting, stroke frequency and force with the aim of reducing total energy expenditure of a dive, and this has consequences also on dive time. For example if I took an extra 3 strokes (active descent to 45m) then I could reduce dive-time by 5-7”, but I consider this an insufficient return for the energy cost involved in 3 strokes (especially during the descent, where aerobiosis is predominant). It is a similar toss-up with weighting: 1kg would save 1 descent stroke but add 2 strokes in the ascent… at the end of the day I prefer not to wear any weight at all. I used to ascend quicker (longer reach, higher stroke frequency), but after slowing down a little last November in the Bahamas I immediately added 2m (and 8-10”) to my max dives. Here in the salty Red I am using an extra descent stroke (7 total), but otherwise it’s the same dive strategy.
