Training diary for 81m CWNF

New diary entry for yesterday's dive just loaded to www.verticalblue.net

P.S. David,
I have done a lot of experimenting with weighting, stroke frequency and force with the aim of reducing total energy expenditure of a dive, and this has consequences also on dive time. For example if I took an extra 3 strokes (active descent to 45m) then I could reduce dive-time by 5-7”, but I consider this an insufficient return for the energy cost involved in 3 strokes (especially during the descent, where aerobiosis is predominant). It is a similar toss-up with weighting: 1kg would save 1 descent stroke but add 2 strokes in the ascent… at the end of the day I prefer not to wear any weight at all. I used to ascend quicker (longer reach, higher stroke frequency), but after slowing down a little last November in the Bahamas I immediately added 2m (and 8-10”) to my max dives. Here in the salty Red I am using an extra descent stroke (7 total), but otherwise it’s the same dive strategy.
Are you training in Oklahoma?

Hi Will,

Great to see the depths increasing and I hope you fight hard on the surface for that clean finish and WR that you have worked so hard for.

good luck and keep posting

aw mate, what a frustrating place egypt can be. Really hope the external conditions come together for a good dive as you're obviously completely ready yourself. I can't remember ever having been so interested in a record dive before & will be cheering for you when you're there.

Again, in bocca al lupo!

Crap, i couldn't take it in Oklahoma anymore. I moved back to jamaica and life has been grand ever since. I moved back in March and have been trying to get life sittuated with house, business, work, etc...I am in Maimi now with Rudi discussing training for next year. I am kind of looking forward to training back home with some nice old school, Rocky type traning :) Will be good to have the old 51m lagoon to train in...Much better than pool and gym only...At 51m it's shallow now but you can make a shallow dive difficult by going with no air and using arms or legs only...So I guess I will have a go at it some time soon. Always difficult to find sponsors these days...Seem freediving is losing its popularity. Personally I think it would have been good for freediving as a sport if folks didn't kill the records by doing insane depts past the current one...It looks great for a diver but doesn't help draw any potential sponsors when a category sits forever dormant. Anyway, just thinking out loud at this point.

I just got done reading the latest diary entry...Sucks about not being able to dive from the boat...Crap like that always seem to be getting in the way...Throwing off your mindset and getting you out of "the zone" stick with it dude and stay strong.

Dave

Hey everyone

Thanks for all your interest in the dive. I know that Will really appreciates it and gets strength from all your input and interest.

Cancelling the dive on the 25th was not something that I wanted to do, but in the interests of safety for all involved, it was absolutely necessary. Believe me, it was a bitter pill to swallow as we have all been working for this for a long time. However this did give us time to do a fair bit of legwork to try to secure permission, and this we did.

The dive is now planned for Friday 27th October with Official Top at 10:30 a.m. BST.

No doubt Will will keep you updated as to the outcome [and so will Bill Stromberg as well].

Thanks again to you all,

Mike Lott
