Training diary for 81m CWNF

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
How did Will's dive go, have everybody taken Friday all ready:friday
I hope to hear some more news about the dive soon; Bill will you have the diveprofile up later on.

Have a great weekend.

SWB - Shallow water blackout

It means he didn't make.

To bad it would be nice to see a new record holder.

This means only one thing. More trainig, training, traning and better luck next time.

Training is one detail of the record only ... the biggest problem can be your nerves.

I think your body is strong enough to go for more than 85m...

We know this.

Respect!

PS: Onother question I have: Even I watched the video from the last record attempt in may. I can´t see the lanyard? (the quality from the video is not the best) Where did you put on it? (in may and today)

William doesn't use a lanyard, I asked this during the last attempt.

I didn't know it, but by AIDA rules, it is not required in record attempts, if safety is arranged differently (don't remember details, but it's there in the rules)

This is the reply I got back then:

You don't need to use a lanyard for record attempts, only for competitions. However, if you don't have a lanyard, you need a scuba diver on the bottom, whereas with a lanyard, and a counterbalance, you are not required to have a diver right at the bottom.

I checked the rules pretty carefully, but could not find this though...Can anyone clarify?

Is Will doing another attempt ?
Guillaume Nery made his CW World Record on the second go. I found it strange Will only had a single attempt last time when you could do 3 or 4, after all it costs a lot of money to fly the judges there.

Have you all read Wills account of the 27th SWB.http://www.verticalblue.net/training_diary06.html

He has a very nice way with words. Very straightforward. Not to much elaboration almost to the point of understatements. Lovely.

"infinite regression" ? Sounds very usefull - whatevere it is :-)

And what was it at 10 that made you go for the line. A feeling in the muscles... or in the mind? Conciousness closing in?

Hope there will be time for another attempt.

hard luck with the attempt will and better luck next time thanks so much for the diary made for great reading you obviously have this in you anyway and its only a matter of time before you succeed, the video was great to watch except at the end of course. best of luck in the future

I'm super disappointed for you Will. It takes an enormous amount of dedication and sacrifice to attempt a World Record like this. It's something that only a handful of people are prepared to put themselves through it. It's fantastic to see you out there pushing the limits. Keep on believing in your ability and going deep.

Kia kaha!

Thanks to everyone for the support. It has been a difficult 6 weeks here in Sharm, and it would be easy to become deluded by the whole experience, but thankfully there has been a lot of positive people around me.

To answer some questions:
- I have never dived with a lanyard. AIDA WR attempt rules allow for a D-ring strap on the wrist to which a scuba diver's liftbag can be attached. As far as I know most CWNF records have been set with this system.
- Both this time and in May we ran out of time for a second attempt. Also it would not have been prudent to attempt it again on this occasion - I was completely exhausted, and came down with a fever on the afternoon of the 27th. Originally the attempt was scheduled for the 24th, giving us 4 reserve days, but the boat restrictions meant that we had to keep postponing.
- 'infinite regression' is the word pair that I use to describe what seems to go on during exhale statics with high CO2 levels and blocking contractions using bandhas and tongue lock. HR slows down immensley (potential flatline), there can be bodily spasms and twitches etc (although these pass with training) and various other personalised experiences.
- At 11m when I grabbed the line I was already extremely hypoxic, and knew that I wasn't going to make it. I haven't yet experienced muscle fatigue in any CWNF dive, so in future training I am going to look at ways of maximising the DR in order to shift the dive more into anaerobiosis.

Thanks again for all your support, and big thanks to everyone here in Sharm who worked flawlessly to help with the attempt:
Mike Lott & Marco Nones (safety freedivers)
Tekstreme (safety scuba & rebreathers)
Stefano Sut and camera team
Adam & Louisa Butler
Luca and his mixing station
...and the mythical Riccardo & Susy Murru from Apnea Academy Egypt (organisers)
