Hi guys,

Went out in harbour today certain areas weren't so bad with about 3-4m viz saw one shoal of about 20 bass 3-4lb took the biggest one and thought "we are on". After that saw one bass of a decent size resting up in a hole but spoked him in deeper and didn't fancy my chances of getting out, so gave it a miss!

Then went down to Newtons cove checked out the reef about 3m viz loads of wrasse but no bass! Then saw the most amazing bait ball of little silver fish that seemed to be endless.... followed them out to the sands for a bit then patrolled the bottom for flaties but nothing..... Anybody ever caught any flaties down on the sands there or was I waisting my time?

Then cruised back to Harbour and saw a few other guys spearfishing about also on ribs and then called it a day.

Nice report, but don't get caught in the harbour or Newtons Cove Spearfishing!

whats the problem with spearfishing in portland harbour and newtons cove gloworm?
as far as im aware there are no restrictions?

You are not allowed to fish within 150 meters of any of the arms.

Newtons Cove is also a no dive area.

All have been introduced by Portland Port and the harbour master does patrol with great gusto.

With the olympics coming to Portland Harbour the security will be getting tighter and tighter.

There have been several instances of people spearing where they shouldn't have been and one person was very lucky to escape with his life!

There will come a point when they will press charges and make an example of someone if the rules aren't followed.

If you pm me your email address i will forward you on a letter from the harbour master outlining the rules.

ATB John

Yeah the harbour Master doesn't seem to think its a problem, I was speaking to him last week and he said specifically by name that it was fine to fish there, oh and he was aware that I was spearing as I was all geared up for it!

Is there other reasons I'm unaware of?

regards kevin

Well Kevin you must be a special one not to be under the same rules as the rest of us.

Do you have naked pictures of him?

If you pm me your email address i will pass on an email from the harbour master.

No naked pics! But that is certainly a thought........ him cruising on that big blue rib law enforcer in hand!

Anyways he deffo said it "newtons cove and the grove" so my question still stands is it worth trying for flatties there?
With regards to safety I certainly wouldn't fish it if the public were at lesiure there.

Just an after thought but the cove is quite large so is it ok as long as you're 150m off the breakwater?

I'll PM my email so I can take a look at these rules!

Regards Kevin.

intersting info!
i was aware of a recent incident in the dock yard (queens pier to be precise!) which put spearos rep with the H.M in a sticky situation but after a friend spoke to him before the last L.I.C comp he was very pro spearfishing in the harbour and surrounding area but as glowworm points out the rules for a clear 150m no go zone exists and this includes any activity, what i have read before has stated 'watercraft' but that has changed. anyone drifting through entrances is a definate no no as well and that has included fishing of my kayak!

the restrictions on the activity in newtons cove as far as i am aware is due to recent sea trials of the sonar stuff and the cerburus system but still is an ok to dive.

i await that e-mail glowworm cheers !:)

You both have emails:)

Please read carefully.

The incident @ queens peir was very serious and could have cost him his life:rcardI personally got bumped by the harbour master outside the harbour arms in balaclava bay.He was firm but fair.

As far as Newtons Cove goes for flatties there are some small fish to be found there.

Night diving on weymouth beach near the pavilion is a good flattie spot with red mullet as well.

This is the wrong time of year for flatties though. Another month and they should start to make a strong appereance until december when they move off shore returning in the spring before disapearing again. The local plaice angling competition in held in April @ Abbotsbury.

If you need help finding spots away from the harbour just ask:)
