Hi Elizabeth,
May I ask what cycling shoes you're wearing with your Lunocet Pros?
Of course! They are Specialized Women's Torch, they have double velcro straps with a buckle. The buckle is crucial to keeping your ankles properly supported and the shoes from slipping around after the material has loosened a bit in the water...

View attachment 38269 You've entered a particularly slow moving pod. We'll have to speed up to keep up!

We do have our orders in! Be patient we are right behind you....

Tracking says a dedicated US postal worker opened my package and has reached the Mississippi River. He is swimming upstream toward the Missouri... Then the Platte River and finally the North Platte River to within a few blocks of our post office. It is the snow melt season so even swimming a fast fin takes time to get here upstream¡

Aqua! Photo of Shoes on hand:
You will have them soon, that is for certain. :) And I come from living 4 years in Chicago, I know ALL about the snow melt season!

Elisabeth, welcome! Your description of your work is beyond awesome...I look forward to reading some of your dolphin stories when you can share them. I'm a dolphin/whale enthusiast and love reading about them. Hope to have them join me on a swim one day, when I get to the ocean more!
I will share them all, as it is as exciting to bring my findings to others as it is to discover them! You might be far from the ocean, but a plane ticket and some planning will put you right in the middle of the action without a lot of money needed. One of my goals is to free dive with the whale sharks in Holbox. The season is from June to Sept so I am hoping to have made my fin an extension of myself by then :)

That sounds like a lot of fun! I will have to begin planning, as you're right-that is all it takes. Life's been a little crazy here as I've been working on one big project for 10 months on top of my "day job" as a chiropractic neurologist so lots of stress. My finswimming time is a bit like underwater yoga or moving meditation to me and it has served me well for stress reduction and fitness. Transposing this to the ocean with real dolphins, whales and sharks instead of imaginary ones would be magical. I bet the dolphins respond well to the Lunocet Pro, as it's so biomimetic in design.

Has anyone else experimented with hand weights? Had the idea. Picked up some Everlast 2#/pair weighted exercise gloves for $13 at a local sporting goods store. They are neoprene back and amara palms Velcro closure.

Worked slick. For me more comfy than on my neck. Used them every trip lately.

Cool idea :) But, how is it with the hands stretched in front of you? Technically, there should be quite some leverage on the shoulders , adding some additional, unnecessary strain?

I'm thinking that is part of the magic. Less weight on a longer lever. I like the weight out stretched in front. It feels like it glides well out there and I sense no strain. The front of my coasting self Is still very slightly boyant with a skin suit and the Classic Luno out back. If I continue gliding nearly stopping I will very slowly surface hands first.

Actually don't like it as well with my weighted hands back which is a good incentive for me to stay stretched out. I do not feel any additional drag on my hands like I feel with webbed gloves. There is 1# of weight on the back of each hand and fingers in a 2#pair. ( 4# pairs are also commercially available. I plan to try that too. ) Finger tips are open so dexterity remains good. I still overlap my hands as usual.

Our body drafts through the hole just punched by our hands so a little bigger hole still feels ok.

The gloves are easy to put on. They don't get hot while swimming. They are a little slow to take off because of the half finger design but I have a solution for that I know works.

If we were weighting something to make it go forward through the water.... Where would we put the weight?

........ EXACTLY !!!! ........

I was pretty much a non glider before the swimmers in here began coaching. Please don't think I'm a gliding pro with decades of perfecting behind me! It is peaceful and fun. Just listening to the voices....

If dolphins respond so favourably to the Lunocet, what do sharks make of it? Any observations yet Elisabeth?

I know that when William Winram chooses to swim with big, predatory sharks (whites, tigers, great hammerheads, bulls, etc) he uses bifins and exaggerates his flutter-kick to make it wide, so as to NOT be confused with anything food-like.

He doesn't even use dolphin kicking with bi-fins in this scenario.

He's still around to give me that piece of advice. I think that speaks for itself, if you have seen some of the stills that Fred Buyle has taken, or his IMAX movie...

I am one of the stupid ones (soon to become one of the lucky ones, I hope) that are counting the days till the Pro arrival.
I am curious to see what creatures might come out of hiding for close inspection of the fin, once in action.
In the unlikely event of a run in with jaws it will be impossible to do exaggerated flutter while strapped into the Lunocet. More likely that a very smooth natural dolphin kick might better communicate the message that you, the diver, is far too healthy to nibble on.

Seriously though, as a novice free diver who greatly enjoy exploring marine life, great and small so much so that any improvement that will make your presence less disturbing and intrusive to the marine life very exciting.
With no movement you can attract all manner of things, but with a calm non intrusive swim movement one might be able to experience unique behaviour from some of those creatures that are not so interested in you when stationary.

Glad Ted got his fluke assembly sorted and things are reportedly speeding up.

:D I'm glad to do it, especially as a newbie. I'm really anxious to see how quickly I can descend with the Pro, I got down 30 feet (the bottom of the dolphin enclosure) in 2 kicks with the first Lunocet....I wanna go DEEP
Hello from a fellow, ex cetacean researcher,
Nice to have you on board here. If I may ask, as to better understand what you do.
You stated studying wild dolphins, but in the above post you mention an "enclosure". Is your research conducted out at sea on free pods of dolphins or on captive ones in enclosures ?

New fluid technology time piece. Not a dive watch but certainly a diver's watch. Kudos to the Swiss craftsmanship!

That. Is. Awesome! Very remarkable mechanism especially if it can withstand the daily motion and activity being attached to someone's wrist. I have to admit, I've got a weakness for watches . . .and being a goldsmith certainly doesn't help the problem.

Well thought out and written reviews from AA, I don't own a lunocet but when I look at the photos posted it looks like the classic version is concave and the pro has a very large near flat section, is this right or is it just a problem of the pics, I know the shape changes slightly due to water pressure during swimming .

Thanks for the detailed review AA! It's a busy day at work, but I can hardly wait to get home this evening and give it a thorough read-through. Thanks for taking the time to do such a detailed comparison and review.

Didn't even had breakfast yet (holiday here), had to read teh Pro review first!
As with the fin, AA's review was well worth the wait!
