BSA MCZ News & Discussion

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
It was inevitable that this day would come - hi Robbo66:wave
FYI The forum staff are actively monitoring this thread. Please keep it friendly/respectful.

Hi artiz, which org is that?

Mr X...nothings changed in my absence then ;)
Same old, same old eh. Would appreciate your views on this sometime, or would that be politically incorrect ?.
The correspondence has been friendly and respectful, this is simply a debate.

Hi artiz, which org is that?

Would you disclose your affiliations and memberships of political organisations/parties or even other web sites etc... I think probably not? As a moderator I also think you should know better than to encourage public disclosure of private matters here on DB?

No offence intended.

As Robbo said we are playing nicely! :friday
On the comp side - Development in equipment, diving techniques, diving safety/awareness, Gear setup, social/common interest etc....

I'm not the one with "MCZ representation NOW" by my name, just wondering if you had actually contributed anything other than hot air

Artiz has eloquently stated his position and thoughts in a clear and concise manner. 'Hot air' it is not.

I am still awaiting your response to the 'hot air' I blew a while ago:

"So DEFRA support these competitions do they, and have no concerns ?, and you feel that they offer a positive message as regards ethical, sustainable spear fishing ?".

Give me a break trying to get some work done!

for example - the amount of bass caught in an area in a comp, most guys could catch more on their own in that same area! (oh and they do!)

DEFRA/Fisheries are aware yes (following discussions a few years back), and we are not a problem to them - The amount we take is a drop in the ocean (no pun itended) compared with every other form of fishing

We are all on the same side here

Which automatically leads anyone with even limited intelligence like me to wonder why you would want to continue competing with each other with such scant and seemingly unsustainable resources? Really doesn't make much sense, ethical or otherwise?

I presume the "ethical organisation" you referred to is the Ethical Spearfishing Association you formed with your imaginary friends.
How about you post the response you wrote on "their" behalf? (if such a response actually exists, since you seem so unwilling to post it, and you have removed reference to it from your website, I suspect it doesn't)
No offence intended

Sorry for insulting your intelligence, but the point is not about the limited amount of fish, but the fact one Spearo going through an area carefully and quietly will catch more than 20 spearos rushing and thrashing around in the same area.

In an attempt to return to the spirit of this thread regarding BSA announcements/progression I wondered about the suitability for public/ethical perceptions of some of the recent web site changes.
Is there a possibility that photos via a slide show on the BSA entry/home page of more than a few large and probably female Bass sends the best message regarding sustainability and environmental responsibility?
I also wondered if the Members area has\could have a page with links to as many good coastal webcams as possible on one page? You could perhaps do that via Facebook too?
Again thanks for posting the last announcement... this thread is obviously followed by many of us and the news that the BSA has now taken the lead by involving itself/being part of the latest round of the MCZ/DEFRA discussion and as a body which is attempting to represent us all... that can only be applauded, supported and encouraged by us all!

Re: Re: BSA MCZ News & Discussion

I/we are not simply 'slagging off' as you put it. We are simply pointing out that due to the BSA's obvious promotion of 'Competitions', they are seen by the vast majority of Spearo's to be in total contradiction of what they are attempting to stand for, 'ethical sustainable spearfishing'.
DEFRA and any other organisation looking to ban spearfishing will simply blow the BSA's position out of the sight by highlighting these 'competitions'.
What 'help' do you need here ?. We are asking you to consider dropping the 'competitions' from the BSA's public agenda and reduce admin/work, and by the same token improving the BSA's PR and standing immediately.
What part of that can you possibly not understand ?.

That vast majority?????? How did you come to that? Deeper blue does not make up the vast majority of spearos in the UK and I only see a hand full of people on here who are against it

Interesting point Scott however it is impossible to know any statistical facts about the numbers of spearfishermen in the UK or how many are members of db!
We can speculate about numbers but even then, how do you define exactly what a statistical spear fisherman is?
Someone who owns a spear gun or someone who goes spearfishing more than ten times a year or a thousand variations in between & above!
I would think however that this forum does have a large proportion of active, keen spearfishermen as members but.... how many of these guys are active or prepared to post I cant say.
I do know we have watchers from all walks of life including sea fisheries & possibly other governing body's!
I do think that db offers the best place to reach active UK spearos, more that any where else perhaps & I think that whatever is said on these forums reaches a good percentage of the keen guys.
I have heard mention 'two thousand active spearfishing' as a UK number & this was based around shop businesses selling relevant equipment but that seems like just speculation to me?

DB is a very active public forum and the views voiced upon here are read by many. its one of the main reasons I stopped posting the names of dive sites as its not just our fellow spearos reading. Its not the only way UK spearos keep in contact there's club email systems aswell as Facebook which is growing in numbers day by day but db is far the most active.

Spearfishing is growing in this country and I would much prefer the BSA to represent us then some hot head who hides behind a username on an open forum shouting and screaming because people don't want to follow in his tree hugging ways.

The way I see it is if you take a fish whether by spear, hook, net or walk into the sea naked grabbing the fish by your teeth you play a part in the diminishing stocks. Which is why we all need to work together on this and stop creating divides. Once we've reached our goal of securing the safety of spearing in the UK we can meet on a beach somewhere and throw sand at each other until someone gets bored or I get hungry........whichever comes first.
