Many of us use the Xtar D06 http://www.torchdirect.co.uk/xtar-professional-range/xtar-d06-led-diving-torch.html or similar . Spare batteries can be taken to extend the session provided you have a dry area to change them over (ie onshore, on boat, on float). A backup torch would be useful - I take only one torch at the moment but have 3 spare batteries. Batteries may be found cheaper from reputable traders on ebay. Chargers which can take multiple batteries are worth considering.
Whilst its worth buying a powerful torch, in practice you may dial it down a bit depending on where you are fishing.
oops my mistake, one battery in torch with 2 spare taken. If I regularly head out at night I will buy another torch to avoid battery changing hassle.3 spare batteries! You must be out all night!.....lol
