One last dip last night before I went home after my long weekend break. vis was 2-4m slight swell and an ebbing tide...not lots of fish about, but had to work hard for these boys....very very long swim. biggest 7lb 11oz

Ok so I know this topic comes up a lot after seeing the night spearos success but what torch would you guys reccomend to start out with? It's my understanding you take a couple out with you get a good 4 hour session?

Many of us use the Xtar D06 http://www.torchdirect.co.uk/xtar-professional-range/xtar-d06-led-diving-torch.html or similar . Spare batteries can be taken to extend the session provided you have a dry area to change them over (ie onshore, on boat, on float). A backup torch would be useful - I take only one torch at the moment but have 3 spare batteries. Batteries may be found cheaper from reputable traders on ebay. Chargers which can take multiple batteries are worth considering.

Whilst its worth buying a powerful torch, in practice you may dial it down a bit depending on where you are fishing.

...better add these torches don't tend to take common household battery sizes like AA's. The xtar uses an 18650 battery (which is like an AA on steroids).

If you get a really good 18650 battery for the d06 it should last about 4 hours. I take two torches to save swapping batteries in the water (difficult and an annoyance).

2 torches are defo the best option, however I would suggest you would want to change torch after 2hours!

oops my mistake, one battery in torch with 2 spare taken. If I regularly head out at night I will buy another torch to avoid battery changing hassle.

Does anyone use a lens cover on their torches? I want to find a plastic cap to fit over the end of my torch.

Just protection... when carrying the torch it's sometimes kept in a pouch with some other loose items... having a plastic cap on the end would help prevent the lens being scratched... I have been looking at tops for aerosol sprays etc around the home but haven't found anything of the right size yet.

I also have the D06, but don't really have a need for a cap, but it does come in its own XTAR plastic box. When out at night (or even day, when looking under boulders), I slip it through a torch mitt & attach to my hand, so I have hands free.

The batteries I use for this is a SenyBor 18650 3100 mAh 3,7v & have never had any issues with this. "Torchythebatteryboy" website seems to rate SenyBor quite highly I think the black XTAR one that came with died on me for no reason last year.

Partial response re lens protection, tbh though I have pretty much abused both of my torches and they are still in good working order

Ok fair enough good to know your torches have had heavy use and they are still ok with the lens not scratched to opaqueness

Thanks for the advice guys - I think I am going to get one for next weekend! Also Simon, I was the guy with the kayak at Mupe a couple of weeks back. Good to see your trolley worked well and thanks for the advise on where to go .... Came out with a decent Bass! That said he was the only silver I saw all day!
