Holiday Guernsey 2007

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Mart, Mullet flesh is my absolute favourite sooner have it than Bass.

That is great news mate as I am more passionate about cooking than any thing else. Hopefully I will have the opportunity to cook you something interesting.
PS Glowworm has offered his services as sous chief, even though he is a chief! Cant wait guys bring it on!!

I'm sure the general idea is a "friendly" competition for "Best fish", based on general consensus is what we want. Public relations are important as well so 5 ton of wrasse wont be on the cards. However I for one would be disapointed if a few wrasse and mullet weren't consumed, especially if Mart smokes them first.

I'd be up for a variety of species hunt, maybe showing people new methods and catching different fish. Am willing to have a go at say lobster and crab and/or flatfish rather than just a bass, bass, bass day, every day. I'm willing to show others how to but am willing to learn too. No one knows it all, least of all me. Am keen not to get into too intense diving either. Need to cater for all comers (locals and visitors), whatever their abilities. Trip in my boat should be on too. Some mackerel and a tank for a few scallops might also add variety.

Fingers crossed for good weather, otherwise it'll be the chip shop for tea.

Dave

PS Lobby I caught last year.

Scallops can be found around Guernsey, however, they are worked commercially by a half dozen scuba divers and about a million (so it seems) amatuer scubies. Freediving you can get a few if you can do min 8 to 10 metres but 5 or 6 scallops would be a good catch and 1 or 2 more usual.

On scuba from my boat I go about 60 foot (18 metres), occasionally down to 100ft (30metres) and get from a couple of dozen up to maybe 8 dozen. Commercials all work between 40 and 50 metres, which is why some have died and all of them are somewhat affected.

In my youth we used to drop a crab pot of the rocks in the bay inbetween Portinfer clay pigeon shooting range and the smelly pond (from low tide off the rocks to the smelly pond side).

Always seem to pull up a few decent spiders and lobsters from time to time if your looking for a new spot to try. I would imagine the pools in that bay are pretty good for bass etc as well?

That area is well dived mate, good for flatties on the outside too. Its the Baie de Pequeries, bass on plugs there on a rising tide.

... and what about spearing there and in the gullies on the other side?

Still waiting for the ormers to put in a beanjar ... I'll just have to go again this weekend. Unfortunately they'll be out of season by July!! :D Grand Havre looked like a millpond going past this afternoon - will wait for the intrepid nightdivers to report on vis generally. Must be the first opportunity ( at the weekend anyway) since November.

A few more pics just to whet your appetites!

Tides not perfect but at night it's not so important. Charged up my torch in anticipation of going tonight and now.... got a dose of the bloody flu. Feel like death warmed up and I haven't even been in the sea yet. Forecast looks good so will dose myself on paracetomol and aim for a couple of days time.

I feel crap.

Dave

The sea looks gorgeous. Not too bad a tide on Saturday at 1.5 low early afternoon (ok for daylight attack anyway) but its a major toss up between spearing (cold water), ormering, or fishing... Haven't had to make a choice like that in a long time!!

Looks like the Guernsey thread has moved to the holiday thread
Does look beautiful out there though. :)

Well I have trawled though this thread, as far as I can work out there are six people actually booked up.
Podge

However I have a list of another nine people as unconfirmed?

Sorry I have been a bit slow on this one.1 Shot,Surfnspear,Rowan and myself will all be coming over but we need to book rooms and need to think about bringing the car over as i have had a quote from Condor for £457.00.

Any reccomendations about rooms and i would be grateful lads then i can get one thing sorted.

John I paid £301 for Jim and myself in my car on board the fast Cat from Weymouth if that helps.
