UAE or Oman spearfishing clubs

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
On that note: Fuijairah is getting better according to the reports Ive been hearing, but shore diving is a nono. Also, do not dare go to Musandam unless you know what you are doing. Ive had my gun pulled out of my hand after being caught in a strong current off one of the islands. It is no joke.

Dive offshore of Dubai if you can, a good adventure would be to get into the desert off of sharjah and camp / offroading. Musandam will be calm now and also good for a camping trip.

Red tide is pulled into the shores. Note that the above posts they had to move deeper for it to clear due to the way currents work, around lima was red tide.

Thanks Ali for the info. When I used to live in Qatar, I had a great deal of experience with strong currents and very long swims :)
Was the gun pulled out of your hands due to strong current alone? or you had a fish on your spear which took off with your gun?

Hey Gladiator,

I'd suggest staying on the gulf side of Musandam. Drive up to Khasab from RAK, its pretty easy. As far as I know there is no red tide there. Couple of good spots before Khasab to do shore dives from. You can also try to "hire" a local fisherman from the port to take you to some offshore areas. Never done it, and you'd have to be careful that they are OK with you spearing. The other side (east coast) is a mess because of the red tide. Apart from the discomfort of the smell and swimming in that muck, much of the fishlife is dead. I can recommend a good guy to take you out on a boat there, but honestly it doesn't seem worth it at the moment.

Thanks a lot redline for all the info. We will drive to Khasab as you suggested and will let you know in a couple of days how it goes. Hopefully we'll have some pics to upload :t and share with you.

Just watch out for Coast Guards, spearfishing is still technically illegal by law. just be discreet with your catch and guns.
 
It was just the currents :). To give you an idea of how bad the currents can be, one of the more experienced spearos was pulled off of the rock he was clinging onto... With the rock.

Diving in Musandam is not like diving in qatar. Exercise caution: You CANT fight some of these currents, and will likely be pulled out to sea if you mess up.

keep an eye on the sea, your buddy, and your floats.

Go with buddies whove dived the area, and IMO have a boat, but thats another can of worms....

I would reccomend diving Dubai wrecks (depending on how deep you can go) with a boat as the currents and type of fish are more like Qatar, but wait for a break in the weather.

On Qatar, might dive it this holiday inshalla, if weather stays the same.

Hey Killer,

I honestly don't know if the fishermen would be OK to take you spearing. I've heard of people doing it without any problems, but I wouldn't be so trusting. I've already been put in trouble by an Omani when we climbed a mountain from the UAE side, and accidentaly came down on the Omani side (without passports). The guy locked us in his car and took us to the Khasab police, hoping to get a reward for our "capture" :) I suppose some fishermen could do the same? I guess its a function of how much you're paying them?

you r right, they do it for the money(reward).
 
Most of the fishermen in Khasab/Musandam are secret police, the Omani government appointed them as undercover boarder control to patrol the area.

I remember one time doing a beach dive, swam around to the neighboring bays (approx 4 bays from where we started), the swim back was hell as the currents turned, so we decidedto hitch a ride back with a fisherman.

They were very kind and helpful, and when they dropped us off we gave them a small kingfish as a gesture of appreciation. They thanked us, and left…


GUESS WHAT HAPPENED NEXT

Two 4x4 police cars came dashing down the beach to where we were, accompanied with the fisherman who gave us a ride to identify us!


Took allot of talking to get off the hook, with an undertaking never to repeat the offence!!!

Do you know anything about the red tide situation on the east coast? Has it improved? I just got a new boat, and I'm itching to take it up to Musandam for a spearing trip!

congrads on the new boat !!! ... am actually trying to sell mine, (getting a bigger one :) )

i've heard the red tide is gone ... but not 100% sure, i have not been to the east coast in a long time.

But if you do want to go to MUSANDAM, make sure you get all the paper work done for your boat, they have become very strict up there... you will have to go to the OMANI embassy in Dubai, get visa's, and a crew manifest

Thanks :) Apparently the procedure at the Omani consulate is pretty straight forward. I'll find out soon enough! Will the coast guard at Dibba inspect the boat? I'm just wondering if I have to really hide the guns or if I can just leave them in one of the deck storage compartments...

Also do you know anything about spearing near Umm al Quain? I'm keeping my boat at the marine club there, and there seems to be plenty of fish activity in the mangroves...

Hello there man Congrats for your boat...

Regarding red tide i was told by jewan that it is there and i have double checked with a guy always he is in khorfakan he said it is still there and now unfortunetly increasing and reaching to Sharja!!!

Sorry for this and hope GOD will help us with this tide!!!
 
redline: from my experience these past two years sharjah and um qwein is a free for all. kind of like the wild wild west. just use common sense and avoid spearing on the sheikh's breakwaters and you should be fine

hi redline. yeah i ended up getting a 130, a 120, and a tiny 60. but i much prefer rabitech because of the open muzzle. i swapped out the muzzle of my freedivers 120 with a rob allen open muzzle and its great. it took a wee bit of elbow grease but it worked out pretty sweet with a double wrap of dyneema shooting line
