Great thread , Im new to Dubai and new to spear fishing. I have shot a few fish in PNG and would love to get together with some guys here in UAE and get out some time. Any advice on guns? what type is best? and where to go for a hunt? Pity about all the BS with the fishing law's, Im Canadian 36 yrs old, no boat but willing to travel a bit to meet up with someone that knows what they are doing.
Cheers all
GF

welcome to Dubai,
guns usually used out here are mostly euroguns, some that are really serious (boats, blue & deep water) use sometimes Reef. i personally have a cressi comanche 90 (back up) and my main gun is a Piccaso centuary 110. i find this is more than enough for the spearfishing i do! they sell guns in Al Samak, not been there myself but am told it is good expensive, or you can go to Go Sports for the new Cressi sub or Al Hamour on the beach road opp. Lime Tree cafe and next to Sports Market. places to hunt, have a couple of special spots that i like but generally the break waters are the best place if you dont have access to a boat, i have been to musandam a couple of times but it is illegal there so you have to be really really careful! also, there have been cases of people being caught, fined and had all gear conviscated in Dubai... thankfully i have not yet been caught! touch wood :)
enjoy!

Ah!! that's the BIG question.... I suggest you get someone who speaks Arabic well with an Emirati accent to call the Ministry and get an answer. (Get it in writing).

I know a resident Emirati who works in the abu dhabi secret service and he made a few phone calls when i asked him about spearfishing in UAE, he replied that it is completely Illegal in all of Abu Dhabi, so i asked him about fujairah or Dubai, and he said he cant get that information because different cities have diff governments and that i had to ask the governments in those state.
Basically Im sure there is no Spearfishing in Abu Dhabi, but does anyone know about Fujairah or Oman??? Im dying to know...

Arent we all buddy... I havent ever been in trouble with police for spearfishing, but i know people that have had all their equipment taken and their boat impounded in dubai for spearfishing, i think its down to what the police man you are dealing with, think;do they agree with it or not? and if they feel the need to cause you trouble and inconvenience at that time... i knwo it doesnt help but it is still just an unanswered question in Dubai, that unfortunately no one can answer to :p

Hi Fisher King

Can you ask your friend if polespearing is also considered illegal?

Thanks

Nice to see the spearo network growing in Dubai ...

To answer a few questions on spearfishing:

* Abu Dhabi - Yes completly off limits

* Dubai - from my first hand experiance with the law ... spearfishing is illegal on any man made structures so thats all the Palm Islands - World - Marker bouys - AND Break waters. the only place you can safely spearfish are the wreks + Islands off shore (Approx 50-60 miles). spearfishing on break waters without a boat is safer than doing so with a boat, reason being is that the boat gets picked up on the coastgaurd radar... and before you know it they are on you. word of advice: dont get caught!!! risk loosing your gear, and if its a repeated offence - risk getting your boat confescated and a fine of up to 50,000 AED (been there done that :( )

* Oman / Musandam - been caught there as well so its definately illegal there too.

* Fujairah - thats the wild west of UAE - dont think they really care :)

Hope this helps answer and clarify some of the issues with spearfishing.

For all those with the spearfishing bug - i know you will continue to spear fish (I DO :) ) Just be careful - shoot the big fish - have fun - and DONT GET CAUGHT !!! :) :) :)

Yo Hudasmt,

I asked him about using a pole not a gun, and he said everything is illegal in abu dhabi, even if u create a spear out of a shrub and ur underwear.. haha well he didnt say exactly that but u get my point..i suggest spearing somewhere else, i live in AD too and its as horrible for me as it is for u...feckin shite i tells u... im new here from canada dont know no one, and im down to get drunk as hell if u and ur friends r goin for beers sometime..or even some spearing, will b gettin a boat in 2 weeks cant wait.

enjoy

Thanks for asking dude. I'm new to the sport, mostly im just snorkeling, its only mid this year i discover freediving and spearing,so i might just slow you down. I still have to get a freediving course from island-sands. I'm just a min underwater. Thats the reason why i still havent bought a gun yet. But i already completed all my gears. I just dont have a dive buddy to start with. I'm up for the beers thou. I'm training every Friday and Sunday morning after the emirates palace hotel open beach at the 2nd breakwater if you're bored and nothing else to do. Depth is only 5 meters average but its better than training in a very shallow pool. Mostly i just take photos and videos of myself hehehe roflBuzz me for the beer,49er's and Hero's Bar are good place for live bands and beers.:friday:friday:friday

Cheers!!!

Hello guys, I hope someone is still reading this thread. I am planning a spearfishing trip to Musandam with a friend of mine this weekend. Anyone interested to join? can anyone recommend a certain spot?

We are thinking about driving from Dubai on Thursday night and camp somewhere in Musandam'a area ... we have never been in Oman so this will be our first trip. Is it safe to camp? how's weather like this time of the year? Are we going to need a wetsuite? how thick? Can we rent a boat for few hours anywhere? are there local fishermen boats that would be willing to take us for a fee?

Sorry for the many questions but I am sooooooooooo excited for this trip ... I it has been almost a year since I speared last so you can immagine how exctied I am.

Hope to hear back from someone and if anyone is interested to join it would be awsome.

Ciao

Gladiator,

DON'T DO IT!

I was in Musandam past weekend: took a boat from Dibba up towards Lima rock, which is about half way up. The whole area has been affected by a red tide algae bloom. It is a disaster - the water is dark red/brown, and there is lots of dead fish on the surface. Everything from puffer fish to sea snakes to a tuna. There is no way you can swim in the water, and the smell is truly overpowering. We camped for 2days, but well back from the beach. Never touched the water all weekend. The guy that took us out had warned me that it was bad, but I thought we could brave it. Big mistake. After dropping us off the guy went further north for a dive. They had to go out about 15miles from the coastline to actually get some clear water. Southwards, the red time extends all the way till fujeirah. Apparently it has been like this since late August. I'm amazed that the local press has had no coverage, given how the local fishermen are suffering. Also most of the dive operators on East coast are in trouble because of cancellations.

The only good news is that with the water temperature dropping fast, we should see the algae die off quite soon.

Cheers,

redline

yes as redline mentioned, i really suggest that you ammend the trip date to Feb 2009.
Lets hope that fish will come back soon.

Crap!

I've already bought my unrefundable airilne ticket to Dubai (I'm flying from Damascus)

Is there any good spot on the way between Dubai & Musandam that is not affected by this algae? I am going to stick to my plans anyways for the road trip but I guess I'll have to cross off the spearfishing part :(

Redline: just for curiosity, how much did they charge for the boat from Dubba? is it a per-hour charge?

Thanks a lot for the both of you for your kind replies.

Cheers
